Fence for backyard?

Fence for backyard?

Why, oh why, did DH and I decide to buy a house 2 weeks after we got back from our HM?!? I thought I was done with having to deal with vendors, now we get contractors! We now have to decide on materials for a fence in the backyard, as we have a large dog and w/out a fence, he will run after the poor mailman everyday Anyone have any experience w. wood versus vinyl fencing? Both are way more than I thought a 'simple' fence would be, so any feedback would be great. Thanks!

Wood = less expensive, more upkeep

Vinal = more expensive, almost no upkeep.

I do not know how big your property is, but the vinal fencing they have now can cost you an arm and a leg. It looks beatutiful but very costly.

The wood fences look nice but must be kept up with.

good Luck!

I'd **** up the cost and get either a Vinyl fence or chain link. Wood does need alot of maintenance and doesn't have the durability or shelf life of the other products.

True wood (stockade, etc.) is cheaper but if you have to replace it a few times over the life of your ownership- how is that saving you money? It's a short term solution.

Good luck.

I could not believe how expensive the fence quotes we got were. I thought poor DH was going to collapse when they told us. Our entire lot is 1/2 acre, but we are not looking to fence the whole thing, just in the back of the house and a small side portion. For what these contractors want I can buy a new car!

We are so torn, as we dont really want to break the bank on vinyl, as this is an unexpected expense. But like you said, wood is a pain in the as$ to keep up. I am wondering how long it will stay before it needs maintence, esp. when we have one big dog already, and will be getting another to keep him company soon. I def. do not want to have to go through this again in 5 years, having to replace the whole fence...decisions, decisions

We actually just got a new fence, white PVC with gates in the front so it looks nice and wood in the back, I think cedar which is supposed to last longer. And yes, it was a lot of $$ which is why we got the white PVC in the front only! But it does look nice.

We have a beautiful white PVC fence that was installed last fall. It cost a a bit more than wood, but it will last longer, so it was easy to justify.

I am all about convenience, and a fence with virtually no upkeep is for me.

I have the white vinyl fence and it always looks beautiful and clean. No water sealing to do. It also comes apart if you need it to. We had to open it several times to get different machinery in our yard. Very very convenient.
