FH back from Iraq...

Any ideas on how I could honor my FH at our wedding for his bravery fighting for our country in Iraq? He was there for 18 months, serving in the infantry, on the front line. He lost a good friend in an explosion. I know serving meant so much to him, what could I do to honor his safe return and his bravery?
I thought:
1--To donate in lieu of favors to the Iraqi Veterans at Walter Reed hospital?
2-- Have a grooms cake honoring his services to our country?
3--Play a song...'My Hero' by the Foofighters maybe or
does anyone have suggestions of any other good 'hero' songs out there? At what time during the reception should I have it dedicated to him?
Or any other ideas?
Thanks girls!

Re: FH back from Iraq...

First off 18 months?!? Whew..... what happened to 15 month max?!? I'm so glad to hear that he's home safe!! I think honoring him is a good idea. I personally like the donation in lieu of favors. I think it's a great idea idea in fact!

How long has he been back? If not very long then I mgiht be a little concerned about playing a song for him at the wedding. Not because he doesn't deserve it (because he does by all mean), but because he lost a good buddy and it may bring back a lot of hard memories. I would hate for him to be thinking about things like that on his wedding day. Just a thought. On the other hand, I think it would make him feel extremely honored and loved to know how much his wife supports him.

Re: FH back from Iraq...

first of all i know you needed that
my FH is Army so i know how hard a deployment is.
1 we are doing donations to the uso and heros on the homefront rather than a favor no one will ever realy use.
2 we keep going back and forth from a 7-11 coffee cup shaped grooms cake and one that looks like his beret

3 as for the song i think thats awesome or lone stars i'm already there i love that song when ever FH is away with Army stuff i cry when i hear that one.... doesn't mariah have a song called hero too?
there are so many good songs.

if you ever need to talkfeel free to FM me
the transition home is a bit rough sometimes
Michelle

Re: FH back from Iraq...

I like theI first two ideas the best. I would agree that a song may be too emotional?

Please thank him for his service. We are all grateful to him.

Re: FH back from Iraq...

My DH spend 15 months in Iraq so I know how you feel. It's such an amazing feeling when they get off that plane and you know that they are home for good!!!

We added a prayer for the troops into our wedding ceremony. Maybe do a patriotic themed candle lighting for all those serving our country.

I think the donation is an amazing idea - have you looked into Wounded Warriors or other programs that help returning vets?

Re: FH back from Iraq...

I like the idea of the donations and the groom cake...it shows you are thinking about his service and his fellow soldiers, but keeping it light so he is able to focus on being home and marrying you...

Please thank you FH for his selfless service to myself and this country!!!

Re: FH back from Iraq...

God Bless him!
My son Peter (in the picture with me) spent a year in Iraq too so we know how you are feeling. Peter didn't want anything when he came home, but that is him. Nina did, however, have a grooms cake for him to celebrate both his homecoming and his birthday which was two days after the wedding. She had Russo's make up a replica of Yankee stadium since he is a big Yankees fan. It was great and he loved it. It was a good way to honor him without making Iraq the focal point since he didn't want to be singled out for his service. Strange I know but that is how he felt.

I wish you the best of luck in the future and thank you FH for all of us. Hopefully he won't have to go back. I pray everyday that Peter won't have to back in the future.

Liz

Re: FH back from Iraq...

Oh I am so glad he is home! Congrats! We just got the dreaded call about them bringing my FH back!! Althought I think they are going to skip him for now because he is in School Full time. UGH..He is a Marine who deployed twice and is now on inactive duty!!!

He is wearing his uniform for the Church, I am doing a Marines groom cake and doing a small donation. As far as a song, we are going to play 'proud to be an american' but he doesn't want a big deal! UGH!! We are going to have over 20 Marines there so I wanted to do a little something!!!

Re: FH back from Iraq...

Lee Greenwood's Proud to Be An American is a great patriotic song. I doubt there would be a dry eye in the house.

And thank you to you and FH for the sacrifices you've made.
