A quick rule of thumb: Don't let your FH watch any of those bride shows on tv at the risk of pissing him off. He hates those girls on those shows- bridezillas and rich bride poor bride.
We got into a discussion after the last show about what a normal budget should be. I thought $30,00 is roughly the average cost. He seems to think that we can have it for closer to $20,000. I'm all for saving money, but the hall is allready $14,00 and the photographer/videographer is $5,000. We are cutting costs and having friends help doing the DJ and the cake. But i don't think i'm wrong here. I agree with him that it's silly to spend tons of money for one day, but you can't negoitiate your wedding down to the prices are parents were paying back in the 70's.

Sorry, but your FH is not being realistic.... with your prices you are going to be close to about 30,000 including everyyyyything. Of course you can try to cut down on things here and there, but you guys are spending a decent amount of money at the RH and photography. My FH and I did about the same thing and our budget is also 30,000. Don't forget to remind him that you also have to pay for your honeymoon, limos, flowers, etc. and everything will add up. I looooove watching bridezillas with my FH b/c I keep showing him how I am not as crazy as these girls who are on tv.... yes, I will flip out when things are wrong- but I am not over the top lol

Weddings are expensive, especially in NYC area. I don't think 20,000 is a realistic budget anymore. Unfortunately, these places just gouge you when they hear wedding. It's really sad in an economy like this. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

my FH hates bridezilla's with a such a passion. he says everything about it is negative and that he is glad that he dint watch this show b4 we got engaged or else... he wouldnt have done it!!! he wouldve been too scared!!

My FH blew his top today, and 'thinks' he laid down the law about all the wedding shows I watch. I was watching my fair wedding and he went crazy, and told me he 'hates all these shows, and if I watch them when he is around he is going to cut the cable wire' lol. He has budget shock about everything, I just sort of keep him out of the loop. He flipped when he heard how much invitations were and he wanted to send email invites only. All you have to do is basically tell them 'I got a great deal', or tell them its 1/2 of the actual price. I am on a strick budget 25,000 and I've watched my pennies, I can be done.

yeah i don't know why he lets the shows piss him off. when the girls all start acting bitchy and demanding and don't care about what it costs 'cause it's my day' or 'i'm the bride this is what i want!' He starts flipping out, but then he's grateful that i'm not like that. Frankly i think it's kinda funny but i also feel bad for those poor grooms getiing stuck with these crazy brides.

I agree with you in the sense that if your RH is $14,000 and the photographer is $5,000 that's $19,000 right there. How in the world could you book the remaining things, such as the florist for one, with just $1,000? It isn't possible to have a $20,000 wedding with $19,000 of it spent already lol. Make a list and show him just how expensive everything is lol, he'll realize how little $1,000 will get you for a wedding. Men are clueless half of the time when it comes to costs lol

Rule of thumb- whatever your hall cost, double that to get your total wedding cost. So A $14,000 hall will put you around $28,000 IMO thats pretty damn good out on this island!
*edit- You normally make back the cost of your hall in gifts!! remind him of that!!
