I think he's nuts. I have never desired to buy a home in NY because not only are they way too expensive, in the end, I won't be able to get what I want.

I absolutely must ave a driveway and a nice size back yard.

I need one bedroom for us, one for each of the children we want to have, and a guest room. That's 4 bedrooms total.

I need at least 2 bathrooms.

I need an office.

All of these things are very important to me and are thinks I will not compromise on. So you see, it would cost at least $500K. We cannot afford that. Ugh, men. Why does he feel the need to own a home here. You would think a vacation house would be enough.

You can definitely find what you're looking for under $500k.

It depends on the area you're willing to look in and whether you're up to doing some work.

I would do some research before totally omitting the idea.

Guess we're all 'nuts' here because most of the women on this board own a home in NY. Not sure the kind of response you're looking for???

Yeah, that may be true, but I am pretty sure that most women on here make a lot more money than I do.

I guess I am just freaking out a bit. I just don't want the responsbility of a huge mortgage.

I am sure there is a website that can tell you how much of a house you can afford to buy. But I forgot what it is. Anyone know?

I understand where you're coming from! The houses on LI are expensive! Hope that you and your DH can find something you both like. Good luck!

I actually found one in Woodhaven queens (not sure about the neighborhood. It has 4BR, 1.5 baths, and an office. And it in the range that we can allegedly afford.

I don't know if the realtor.com mortgage calculator includes property taxes, and THAT can sometimes be a killer. I recently saw a nice starter home for about 260K. A reasonable mortgage of around 1300.00 a month, but the yearly property taxes were 7K! There is also homeowners insurance (but I don't have any idea how much that costs), and just a general 'house savings' everyone should have, in case the boiler breaks or a pipe bursts.

We got all that (but one of our bedrooms(or it could be a den) and bathrooms are part of an apartment for now.
We are all the way out in Suffolk County in Centereach.. I *think* you work in NYC so it would be too far for you, but if not there are homes here for $400K or less that meet your requirements.
Ours was less than $300K but it needed A LOT of work.
