Fh Mom in law

My mother in law wants to wear a black dress for the wedding. My fiance and i are very adamant about her not wearing black to the wedding but she says she likes wearing black to formal events. She is a sweetheart and i want her to be happy but aside from our displeasure, it is also, a great big culture faux pas in my culture. Bride and groom family members are not to wear black as it is frowned upon I am concerned we might not be able to change her mind. Yikes!

Did you try explaining the cultural significance to her? Maybe suggest other dark colors like plum, navy, dark hunter green?

When is your wedding planned? Black works fine for evenings, especially in fall/ winter. It used to be considered bad mojo, and so were tanks and cutoff jeans, not anymore. Just that it’s become rather common and people don’t frown upon it anymore. I have seen many people wearing it these days.

If your FMIL has had her heart set on the dress and won't settle for other dark colors (as suggested above), it should be fine. Hope she is planning to pop it up a bit :)

I agree! Why don't you go shopping with her and try to get her to try on dresses in dark colors? Tell the SA so they can help point her in a direction that isn't black.

My FMiL is wearing black. I think it's a bit off and funny, but I didn't give her any limits when she was shopping, and i don't find it offensive, so I'm letting her do it. I think its entertaining.

Definitely suggest to her some other dark colors that have the same effect - navy blue or eggplant - theyre dark enough to still have that flattering effect shes looking for, just without all of the meaning that goes behind black.

Some people just feel more comfortable in black because it is generally slimming and hides everything so maybe this is why she wants to wear black. I'm sure you would hate for her to be uncomfortable on the wedding day.

You guys are right. I'm going to explain to her the culture aspect of it as well as suggest I accompany her to go dress shopping. I was thinking she should get a plum colored dress.
