Film vs. Digitial HELP! ASAP!

Please - what if the photographer that I am thinking of using only uses digital? Do I need film? If anyone knows the difference, it would be greatly appreciated - I am hours away from making a decision on this place.... THANKS!

Re: Film vs. Digitial HELP! ASAP!

I am not a huge fan of Digital only- unless you see A LOT of his work in albums. Also how long will those prints last? Some computer printed photos will not last as long as traditional film.

Agree with Michele. Also, digital cameras are not as infallable as the 35MM kind. If the disk on the camera is corrupt, bye-bye photos. Probably doesn't happen often but still a risk.

Re: Film vs. Digitial HELP! ASAP!

I am loyal to film but there is a lot they can do with digital -- some really neat albums, plus you can choose your photos usually online and get them quicker. But I would go for someone that provides both.

Digital is sometimes cheaper and can provide a good package to someone on a budget. But like I said I'm more a fan of film.

Re: Film vs. Digitial HELP! ASAP!

The difference that a vendor pointed out to me was digital pictures are pixelized. That means that as they are enlarged, or changed in any way, they can become blurry and lose quality.

Use Film!

The photographer that I am using (Patken) shot our engagement pictures in digital because they want to start phasing it in but they realize that they are not ready. This camera was A LOT of money. The regular pictures are fine, but there are certain features of the older cameras that the kinks aren't worked out yet. One of the pictures that we took had a like a soft filter on it and it just didn't look good. You could tell it was digital. This wasn't a problem for me b/c they are aware of everything and going to give me another instead. The others were perfect though. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Re: Film vs. Digitial HELP! ASAP!

i thought digital was inferior as well and posted this same question when i was looking for a photographer. the photographer i went with shoots in digital, and he showed me many, many pictures enlarged to wall size and they came out fantastic. the color and detail was amazing. these digtal cameras that pro's use are not the same ones that you or i would use. They can do some great stuff with editing too. I think they look great, i couldn't tell the difference.

Re: Film vs. Digitial HELP! ASAP!

I think that there are benefits to using both film and digital. If the photographer shoots at a high enough resolution there shouldn't be any problem with large format prints, and the smaller ones would certainly be sharp. Prints are sent to a lab and developed, so they come out on photo paper just like film prints (I print my home digital photos that way). The risks of the memory card messing up is probably just as likely as the film not spooling right or any of the other related problems. However, with digital cameras, the camera can tell you when there is an error and the photographer instantly gets to see if what the photo is like. This way he/she can retake the photo right there if, say, someone's eyes are shut or a different angle would be better. Also, digital cameras allow in more light, which make photos in dark areas more visable in prints. That is just some of the things I know about digital photos. There are reasons to go with digital and reasons to go with film, in the end it's up to you!

Re: Film vs. Digitial HELP! ASAP!

I lovemy digital camera and Im sure the ones the photographers have are a gazillion times better...but just remember...there have been no long time 'studies' with pictures processed digitally. Will the picture last 100 years? will your great grandchildren have the picture as a family keepsake? just a thought..

Re: Film vs. Digitial HELP! ASAP!

Our photographer switched to digital recently. He is soooooo excited about it and would never have switched if he thought the quality was compromised. There are so many benefits to digital photos:
1. They will know immediately if the shot works or if someone blinked, etc.
2. They are not limited by rolls of film. (Ours told us that instead of 350ish proofs, we will probably get closer to 700!)
3. Enhancements and effects are much easier on a digi photo vs. film
4. Our photog brings a laptop with him to download the photos as he goes along so he doesnt have to worry about the media cards.
5. The pictures are still printed by a photo lab, not off the computer, so the quality of the prints are the same.

With both methods, anything could happen to the equipment and they come prepared for this possibility.
