I think it had to do with the fact that it was outside and my camera didn't need to use the flash... the natural light was enough. And apparently the FH used a feature on the camera for close up shot... whatever works!

definately insure it!! its not that much money and it covers alot! and yes a jeweler can appraise it (especially if its someone you trust) we went to a friends mom to get my ring actually! but we also got an outside appraisal just to make sure it was accurate

We did another appraisal also to guarentee accuracy of the jewelers. They were both to the exact $$$$ so that was nice.
We went to The Jewelry Judge in Garden City and insured thru Jewelers Mutual.

Re: FINALLY insured my ring!
I'm another paranoid bride-to-be who got her ring insured right away. I wouldn't take a chance on driving my car without insurance, so I wasn't going to take a risk on my ring either! I added it on to my homeowner's insurance, but I've since read that it's better to buy an indePendent jewelry policy, so that if something happens to your ring, your homeowner's rates won't go up. Jeweler's Mutual seems to be the most highly recommended.

if you use Jewelers Mutual...the whole application process online takes 10 minutes...you print a page out, stick it in an evelope with your appraisal and DONE! TOO easy....should've done it long time ago. Now I have such a sense of relief =)
