(crashing)

a lot of people, myself included, don't register for china ... if it's not something you will use, then don't register for it.

Re: fine china

I haven't registered for fine china yet and probably won't.

FH and I didn't see any that we were crazy about and nothing felt like 'us.' too delicate and traditional?

I don't think it's a 'must.' register for things you'll use

I am registering for fine china. I felt that I would buy my own everyday if I didn't get it, but I would never buy myself fine china. If you want fine china, definitely register for it now! You will never get the chance again, but I'm sure you would buy everyday plates if you had to.

Plus you can always return whatever fine china is bought if no one buys the everyday stuff or vice versa.

Re: fine china

I wasn't a fan of the idea originally but I registered for it anyway. I had a lot of issues with the cost of it but then as the planning when along and we started talking about family dynamics, it was important for me to have.

1 - to use for family holidays
2 - hopefully pass it down to my children

It's a matter of preference - there are some really nice china patters/companies that aren't that expensive. So you get the concept of china without the cost.

My FH and I went this weekend to register for 'Chirp' by Lenox.. we had NO clue how much all the 'must have add-ons' were. We were OK with the set being about 150.00 each and we figured a couple hundred more for the add ons... when we finally gave the girl our scanner and she printed it all the prices FINALLY came up and it was unreal. One serving plate was 285.00 and the list goes on and on.. needless to say i felt like we wasted alot of time because I don't even want the china now, we are deleting it all. Just be sure you ask just how much it all is... the add-ons don't have prices labeled and they are SO expensive.

It would have ran well over 3K for 12 sets plus all the add ons.

I don't think you HAVE to. There is no you HAVE to register for this or that. It's different for everyone. I didn't register for bedding or bath stuff and I get comments about it all the time. But I don't need that stuff now. I don't know what my furniture will be, colors of my rooms. I'm not picking my homes colors based on a bath towel! lol

it's all based on individual needs

Re: fine china

we didn't register for it b/c we really didn't need it. it was more important for us to get the everyday china esp since we have nothing moving in together. the fine china can come later when we are more settled and have a house

Re: fine china

We didn't register for it. My mom basically said not to. Our guest list is only 120 people, which makes my shower less than half that. We registered for everyday dishes, and some pretty $$ appliances. I would really rather have this awesome toaster/convection oven than 3 sets of china. And what happens if you end up with half the sets? Are you really going to buy the other half on your own? Or do you have that generous of a family member that would buy them all? So even if it's $90 per place setting, that amounts to nearly $1k after taxes.
My mother has her mother's china. She has no further need for it and wants to give it to me. FH's grandmother has a cabinet FULL of china. Just sits there, no one uses it. Those have so much more meaning to us than brand new modern china. I'd rather pass down my grandmother's china to my children than one I got on my own, even if it's very old fashioned!
BTW, it's not like I don't like the china that's out there! Believe me, I look at it wistfully from time to time, but I know what's practical.

Re: fine china

We registered for it at bbb. We got the big set of 8 place settings that was $199 and we got the 4 additional settings that were like $49 each so we have the 12 piece setting and out salt and peper shakers. We didn't get the platters and what not but no biggie. But I'm surprise pepple bought the china and not out everyday.

It's definitely up to you...I initially didn't want it, but when fortunoff went out of business, they were selling their china for $23 a place setting (or less) so my family got me all the settings.

My feeling is that your registry is a 'wish list'....my sister registered for it didn't get it all and got macy's gift cards in return and bought everything else she didn't get and needed....I registered for it and already got 4 settings for engagement - I want it for memory and Jewish Holidays.....

Agreed!! Plus, a lot of the stores will give you a discount after the wedding to stock up on what you didn't get! :)
