First BM Dress Shopping Trip! -- feeling guilty...

First BM Dress Shopping Trip! -- feeling guilty...

So I had gone with my mom and tried on BM dresses to see what I liked for my girls, since they are all OOT, and basically decided on a line of dresses & a color/length. I'm letting each girl choose her style. So this weekend I went to Boston (where my MOH & 1 BM live--there are 2 others who live elsewhere), and took them to try on the dresses and see which they liked. My MOH was great, she has been in 3 weddings before, and is 5'11' but slender, so all the dresses looked decent on her, and she could fit into the samples (mostly) which were all sized 8-14 (mostly 10 & 12). My BM has never been a BM before, and even tho we tried to tell her the dresses won't fit, be prepared, don't feel bad, it was bad. she is about 5'2' tops, but probably wears a size 12 in street clothes, so none of the samples really fit her at all, and looked ridiculous b/c the proportions were so far off for her...i mean alterations will fix anything but I felt like it was a big blow to her not to fit into any of them....of course she is a good friend so she tried not to show it, but I can tell (you know how you can tell with your good friends). I guess there wasn't much else I could have done but I still feel bad....I know it will be fine in the end, but it's making me feel guilty making her buy a dress she hasn't (and can't) even try on.....has anyone else felt this way?

I know that uncomfortable feeling! Nothing you can do about it though. Stores just dont' have sample sizes to accomodate all different shapes and sizes of girls. Just be confident that with the right alterations that she'll look great and be comfortable in whatever dress you pick out. Try to pick a style that is flattering to her figure if you can. A-line dresses seem to flatter almost any figure and I know I personally feel like when there is some kind of detailing at the waistline it looks more flattering too.

don't feel too bad. i went shopping with one bridesmaid who i knew couldn't fit into any of the samples in the store. but i wanted her to come and check out the dresses anyway. when it's time to pick out the dress, she'll pick something that she knows will flatter her. she's been buying clothes for herself for a long time. i'm sure she'll pick something that'll look great on her, just trust her decision. i think it's a great idea to let your bridesmaids pick out their own dress.

I know what you mean, my one BM isn't fat by any means, but the dresses just didn't fit her, and I felt soo bad, and she kept making jokes but I know it hurt her, but this way I hope she is even more excited to see her self when she goes to try it on this weekend, because I know she will look AMAZING!

Same thing happend here. I went with 4 of my 6 BM and only one of them could fit in the dress to try them on. We were using her as the model. My MOH is like 6'2 and is skinny....but ony certain dresses would fit her. Another one is 5 months pregnant...so the belly wasn't helping and my other BM is only 4'11 so she was swimming in them all. After everything was said and done my MOH came to me and told me how horrible she felt because she couldn't fit into anything. I felt so bad and didn't know what to say. I just know that they all will look amazing on the day of and those sample sizes are just nuts when it comes to the average girl.

Thanks girls! Yeah, I know it will be ok in the end, and the dresses will look great and hopefully they will all feel great too.....

related side question--does anyone know if 2 piece or 1 piece dresses are easier to alter for someone who is really petite (i.e., needs to significantly change the silhouette of the dress more than just length...)?

its easier with a two piece no matter what their size. I was in a wedding and we did the two piece....we had girls of all sizes and shapes and the two piece works out perfect.

thanks, good to know! that's what my instincts were saying, but it's good to hear the voice of experience
