Long story short, is it bad to go with a song NOBODY knows????
My family is big on knowing the song, all my cousins and relatives danced to Elton John or Billy Joel, etc. popular music - FH and I are totally anti-popular music.
So forever I had our song picked out. It's an old song from the '60s called 'Never My Love' by the Association. FH never questioned it ... now our wedding is 3 weeks away and he has suggested changing it as we both have become obsessed with a band called Band Of Horses. The song is 'No One's Gonna Love You' ... Though this song is incredibly beautiful it's about either a break up or a very bitter relationship.
Here's the deal, FH wants a song that is from a band we both know and love. I am considering Modest Mouse 'Sleepwalking' ....

I don't think the popularity of the song should change your decision. If YOU guys like it, go for it!!
I wouldn't dance to a song about bad relationships though...Idk...I just feel like it might be a little akward...I would be afraid it's a bad omen or something!!

I agree about choosing a song both of you feel defines you, not worry about whether or not everyone will know the song. Some of my favorite songs are those that I was introduced to by other people! Someone may hear your dance song and like it, and then you've just made a new fan out of them.
I don't think I'd want to dance to a song about a breakup though. I always wanted to have a Richard Marx song as my wedding song, and when I go through them all, most are about lost love, unrequited love, or breaksup! My absolute favorite song (yes, I know it's CHEESY) is Angelia by Richard Marx. It's about lost love, and the video took a different turn and actually killed her, so he's missing her. I wouldn't want to dance to that w/ FH though!

what the song is about should NOT matter....if it is a special song to you - that's ALL that should factor in...
Sweet Jane by the Cowboy Junkies was playing when Dave & I first said i love you....we insisted it be played at the wedding - even though it's about drugs...
What matters is in 5 years, when you hear that song on the radio - or a cd....it makes you stop & remember.
Go with what you love - not what anyone else thinks...

OMG I love Band of Horses. Is There A Ghost and The Funeral are my faves! I say go with whatever you want. Its your wedding and I think all that matters is that you and your FH know the song and know what it means. Modest Mouse is awesome too! Great taste in music!

I looooove that song! Go for it! We are using a song no one but like 10 people will know (if that, more like 5) - it's waste by phish, gorgeous song about just wanting to spend all your time with one person and not do anything else. but no one knows it. that band of horses song rocks. use it!!

choose a song you and FH love. who cares if it's not the 'norm' or popular or typical. thats what will make your wedding yours, and unique.

The Funeral is such an amazing song, it sorta makes me want to cry - the video on youtube is so sad. I don't know what to do. We love the Modest Mouse song and Band of Horses, such a tough call!

Were using a song noone knows. I was really worried about it but I was just at my friends wedding and they used a song noone knew and it was beautiful. If you really want a song everyone knows maybe have 2 dance songs and make the second one a song everyone knows.

i like the idea of having a song nobody knows. it just makes it more special. I remember the wedding where I first heard that one by heartland (which EVERYBODY knows by now. lol) 'I loved her first' and i was just sooo touched by it, i just burst into tears. It's nice to have one of those. I think people get more affected by the ones they can't yet sing along with.

We danced to a song that maybe 10 of our friends knew of it. It was really meaningful to us so that's why we used it. We didn't worry what everyone else would think because it's supposed to be about us.
