When is the right time to go for your first dress fitting?

I got my dress awhile back from the store (bought off the rack - dress in perfect condition). My wedding is January 20th - and i'm not sure when I should schedule my first fitting for...

Any ideas???

My wedding is August 11, and I went for my first fitting last Thursday.

6-8 weeks before is fine.
