First Look- yes or no?

First Look- yes or no?

Hi everyone! My FH and I are getting married at the Swan Club this August, and the banquet manager suggested that we take our pictures before the ceremony. I love the idea of having that 'walk down the aisle' first moment where we see each other for the first time, but I also don't want to miss the cocktail hour while we take all of our pictures.

What's your advice? If anyone did a 'first look' before your ceremony, are you glad you decided to see each other first, and why? If you took all of your pictures after the ceremony, did things feel rushed?

Thanks! :)

First Look- yes or no? - Long Island Weddings

We just got married on Friday and did a first look. I wanted to enjoy my cocktail hour and didnt want to be pulled out for pics. The other thing I liked about it was that I never felt rushed with my pictures. Doing them before gave us more than an hour to get everything done. I never actually got to my cocktail hour for more than 10 minutes because my husband stepped on my bustle and pulled it all out lol. Good luck!

My husband and I did a first look. I feel like it was more special because we actually got to really look at each other and take in the moment. Not to mention the amazing pictures that capture all of the emotion. I also felt that the walking down the aisle moment wasn't really taken away. It's an all together different feeling and is still super special because you know you are walking down to marry the man of your dreams.

Hope this helps!

We're getting married at our venue and we're doing the pics beforehand. I want to be (mostly) at my cocktail hour and the only way to do that is to do the pics before. I love the idea of the 'reveal.' The first time we're seeing each other is just the two of us, no one else watching (ok, except the photographer and videographer) and I just love that. And there's so many cute ways that you can capture that.
I also say 'mostly' at our cocktail hour because our photographer told us that based on our timeline it might not be possible to get ALL the pics done before so we might have to take some during the cocktail hour, but at least not all of them.

we are not doing a first look. i've waited my entire life for the 'WOW' moment while walking down the aisle and, to me, i don't think the cocktail hour is worth missing out on this.

No!! Think of how lack luster you're going to feel going down the aisle if you just saw your groom ten minutes ago. I know, I know, everyone says it feels just as special...but it just can't!! I'd love to be at my cocktail hour, but I'll happily skip it to have the first look happen going down the aisle.

This exactly! So happy we did a first look. We got to enjoy a private moment and have amazing pictures/video from it that you just don't get when you walk down the aisle. It did not take away from the ceremony at all and added to the fun because we got to enjoy cocktail hour.

We are not doing a first look. We are getting married at the church and have time in-between for pictures. We were at one point considering getting married at a venue, but I have always pictured myself walking down the aisle of the church and I didn't want to give that up. If we had to do a first look my family would be trying to sneak a look and it wouldn't be as private as I would want anyways....So it's honestly all about how you think you will feel, what you have always pictured. I never even heard about a first look until we started looking at venues.

We are doing a first look as well, having the opportunity to see each other privately and take in all the emotion while no one is watching. Plus when your walking down the aisle, your entire family is watching, it just as emotional.

It all depends on your preference as you can see. We are having a church ceremony so we will not be having a first look. We will have a break in between to take pics before cocktail hour

I did the first look and don't regret it for a minute. That morning was so stressful, it was so calming to be able to see DH and have some time with him before standing in front of everyone. It was also very personal to have the first look with just the bridal party.

Also, you get to 1) Go to and enjoy your cocktail hour 2) You can do your 'hellos' with your guests at the cocktail hour so you can enjoy your reception and not spend half of it going table to table.
I personally think you get to experience so much more of your wedding while still covering all 'etiquette .'

When soliciting advice on this topic most girls feel strongly one way or another so keep that in mind!

We are definitely doing a first look! Our pictures are before our ceremony and I am also emotional so I don't really want to be walking down the aisle crying my eyes out. Plus, we both wanted to attend cocktail hour!

We are doing a first look for multiple reasons.. Like many of the other girls said we want to enjoy as much of cocktail hour and we want to have that time where it's just the two of us.. We are also doing it because daylight is limited in the winter and we want to take advantage of as much of it as possible. Lastly our first look location is at our childhood bus stop where we first met as kids so it will make it even more special. Excited to have pics in the same spot from when we were kids and then on our wedding day!

We're not doing a first look! Were having a church wedding & want to see each other for the first time when I walk down the aisle. We're also going to have plenty of time to take pictures during our cocktail hour & greet our guests as well.
