Please help. I want to get a starter kit fish tank...I'm so confused about sizes and gallons...And most of all I'm confused about acrylic vs. glass...I think I want a five gallon--is that a sufficient start-up size? Anyone?

Re: Fish Tanks.
I don't have any fishtanks, but my dad has had since we were small (big, small--all types of fish).
It depends what type of fish you are considering. I'd say if you are going to go for a 5 gallon, you might as well go for a 10 or 20. The upkeep will be about the same. 5 is pretty small.
I'm not sure the difference between glass/acryllic. I know my dad's current one is acryllic b/c it is 90 gallons and has this curve. I don't think it makes a difference.
I'm sure at the fish store they could answer all your questions. Many fish stores have complete starter kits.
I just spoke to my dad & he said glass tanks are heavier. He said acrylic tanks scratch very easy and in time can yellow.
He said the same as below that typically small fish need 1 gallon of water but bigger fish or certain types of fancy fish need more space.

Re: Fish Tanks.
I believe it is 1 gallon per fish. So 5 gallons is good to start. Ithink my dad always had glass ones. They are heavier, i assume. Glass smight be easier to clean, but I am just guessing.
ETA- I think my dad had 10 gallons- that's not too big.
I have had fish all my life and I would totally recommend the 12 gallon Eclipse tank. It is on the pricey side but the light and filter are all in the top so it is very easy to maintain. All you need to add is a heater. It is acrylic. When you clean the tank, just scrub off any algae with a sponge so it doesnt get scratched. If you need anymore advice FM me, I would love to help. At one point I have had 5 tanks at one time.

Re: Fish Tanks.
I've had a 5 gallon before. They have really cheap starter glass tanks at Petland. All you need to do is buy a small heater and the top. Depending on size I would recommend between 3-5 fish.
