Fishing for gifts?

Fishing for gifts?

we just got an invite for DH's cousin's baby's b-day party. they live in CA, so obviously we're not going.

they just had a Christening for her 2 months ago and DH and I sent a VERY generous gift!!

upon opening the invite, I couldn't help but wonder... was this a 'please send gifts' invite?

and, would you send one?

If she lives in CA it sounds like it. If I just sent a VERY generous gifts 2 months earlier I might just send a card

Hmm, sounds kind of strange to me, obviously, you arent flying to CA to attend the bday party. Maybe just send a card, especially if you just sent a nice christening gift

My family is big on sending invites to family members who live far away so that they don't feel left out. Does DH have other family members on the east coast who also received an invite?

I wouldn't send a gift if I were you since the christening was not too long ago.

i agree....for my daughter's first, i sent out invites to everyone in the family even though really, i wanted no one to come...i did it more as an announcement/reminder of her day....i expected no gifts in reality...and she did get cards, but no gifts. i would send a card....and not worry toomuch about it...unless you are a hilton, i would not expect you to make my kid's bday party across the country.

wait... same kid, or different kid. Is this their first child? It might just be them going celebration crazy.

If it's the first b-day, I don't think it's fishing. First b-days are very special to new parents.

If you got an invite for their cat's 2 month birthday, THAT would be fishing.
My favorite gift to send is one of those Birthday Prince/Princess hats that they sell in specialty shops - or even Baby Fortunoff. You can just send that with a note that says 'Sorry I can't be there for the b-day, but this is something the baby can wear to celebrate for years to come. Take a picture for me!'. It's thoughtful... and really only about 15 bucks! They'll love it!

Good luck!

Our families also send invites not matter where you are located, just so no feelings get hurt. I'm sure a card is fine.

they only have 1 baby, it's her 1st b-day in June. like I said, we just sent them a very generous check for her Christening (4x more than my MIL told us was appropriate!)

I'll send a card. but honestly, it's not even so much the point of $$ so much (although it's part of it) as that I found it a little 'tacky' (yes, I said it).

I can appreciate them being all excited, but come on. it's a 1 yr old's b-day party 3K miles away! and yes, they sent invites to everyone they know (per my MIL)
