This is just how I interpret it...

If its summer, its afternoon
If its winter, its evening.

I think technically it's afternoon.

true many ppl in the winter will interpret it as evening so i dont think it would matter what it says on the invitation.

It's evening for an invitation - it's afternoon when you're leaving work and still want to pretend that you have time left to do stuff before you make dinner and fall into bed

from wikipedia:

'Civil definition of Evening
From 6 o'clock to 7 o'clock pm.'

however if your reception is starting at 5pm then do put evening if you want it to be more of an evening type of event...either way though if i received an invitation i wouldn't even pay attention to this so it doesn't matter, go with whichever one you like

afternoon.

evening begins at 6:00, regardless of the summer/winter thing.

I put afternoon. I want to do what is proper. That way no one will talk when they get the invite.

honestly if someone will talk about you bc of that then they have bigger issues lol. I mean you can look it up even more if you want to see which answer is best for you...but if youre happy with this then just leave it as it is. Along with the wikipedia definition, there was a site debating this lol, seems theres confusion everywhere hahaha. One thing said something about the saying 'one doesn't wear a tux before 6' so that would indicate that a tux is evening wear so therefore 6pm is evening. Actually i just looked out the window and its 4:24pm and its dark already, winter makes it harder to determine this
