Florence hotels
Fh and I can't seem to make a final decision on a hotel in Florence for part of our HM. Any suggestions?? We are looking for a five star hotel in the city center. We want something romantic but not too far from the main attractions. So far this has caused the only fight during wedding planning!

Re: Florence hotels
I love the Hotel Lungarno - right around the corner from the Ponte Vecchio. It was fantastic!

Re: Florence hotels
Does it have to be 5-Star? There are so many wonderful smaller, romantic and cozy hotels in Florence. This was the view from our balcony on our last trip, and it was a 3 or 4 star hotel. We heard those church bells as well, though were hardly there an hour outside of sleep time. Also, keep in mind that the 'star' system is like grading on a curve . . . . a five star in Florence may not be like the Plaza Hotel in NYC. And a three start in Florence isn't going to be a Comfort Inn. All the buildings are old, everything around you is gorgeous, and what's most important is feeling very 'Italian' while you're there. You will spend NO time in your hotel. It is also not a hard city to get around and see everything, I've been twice.Whatever you do, try to take a tour to DaVinci's place on the hill, where you can see the location from which he sent many a devoted assistant into the air to test his various 'flying machines.' It's a beautiful location and very interesting!!

The Grand Hotel....it is next to the Arno river with views of the Ponte di Vecchio . My parents stayed here when I studied in Florence. It is also smack in the center of town

Re: Florence hotels
By the way, both times I've been I went in August, and despite what you may hear, it's a wonderful time to go. NOT all the Europeans are on vacation, and in fact we were blessed by Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square in Rome (though we were told he'd be 'on vacation') on my first trip in 1998.You will LOOOOOOOVE it!!!! I'm so excited for your Honeymoon! The FH and I made this trip 4 months before we got engaged . . . if I'd known what was coming, I would've held off and made it the HM!!! LOL.

This is a beautiful place, no doubt. But buying jewelry and leather in Florence is a far better use of your Honeymoon resources than a hotel you will walk into late at night, flop into bed, and leave early in the morning. Just an opinion, but I spent lots of money on fine Italian gold and leather, and I still wear and carry it (my briefcase is from Florence!!). I can barely remember my hotel room, except for the pictures of our view.

Thanks for all of the info! I totally agree with you about the hotel...it was part of the arguement. We are hardly going to spend any time in the hotel room- I want to stay someplace romantic and CLEAN but I really do not want to spent 500-600 euros a night.
I love the view from you hotel in Florence-DO you remember the name of it?

Re: Florence hotels
I went to a 5 star in Florence and 3 star, the 3 star was a 100 times better, it was brand new and really clean.Iam cheap cheap travel expert and I cant recomended more than using the blog for Priceline hotels. It is a site were people like us post what they won in hotels and how much.

Def give it a try for Florence
For example my parents went to Paris and stayed at the Le Merdian near the govt(i have no clue what it is called) they paid $110 a night, meanwhile the same night on the hotel website was over $300.

Re: Florence hotels
I stayed at the most amazing hotel in Florence with my family. 5 star, walking distance to everything, the rooms were amazing, central location. My dad did a lot of research picking that hotel. I was 16 so I can't completely chime in on the romance factor, though I did have a very romantic evening (for a 16 year old) walking nearby that hotel with a boy whose family was on the same Italy schedule.I know when we were considering our honeymoon being in Italy I had every intention of going back to that hotel.
I can't remember the name though, but I will ask my parents tomorrow.
There is also a hotel up on the hill that is supposed to be very romantic, we went there for dinner (my family, not me and the 16 year old) but its not walking distance to things in town. Its Chateau Michelle or Castle Michelle (or something Michelle) which I know because of my name. Actually I want to say its Villa San Michelle.
