FLU SHOTS! NEED OPINIONS

FLU SHOTS! NEED OPINIONS

I used to never get a flu shot, until 5 years ago when my dad was sick, he has since passed on. I work for a doctor, and he never takes the shot. I get bronchitis every year which is I think far worse more then the flu. I have been scrambling to find where I can get a shot, only to also be on jury duty this week. I am sooo upset. When I call someplace including the local Govn't reps in my area, they tell me they do not want to hear it. I am so angry because I go above and beyond for the patients in my office especially when they really need us. I do not know what to do... I know it will not prevent the Flu, just weaken it... what would you do? I was told by pharmicists , 2 to be exact, that I should just up my vitamin intake , and take extra vitamin C along with my prenatal vitamins. Any advice? Any doctors out there with advice too? HELP!!!!!! My sister was told that 800 people showed up for the shot last week and they only had enough for 200 people, and another friend of mine said that there was a line around a drugstore today when she drove passed it! I also spoke to the CDC and they said that they are trying to get legisilation passed for the vaccines to get approved from Europe, and they are getting very picky about who can get these shots.

Since you work for a doctor is it possible he can give you the shot? You also said you are taking prenatal vitamins, are you pg? If you are than you are a 1st priority along w/ the elderly, immunocompromised and health care providers. Talk w/your doctor

I work for a podiatrist, so he cannot get the shot, a lot of our patients are elderly. I have tried explaining this to every where I call and they are like, yeah honey we have heard it all!!!!!!! Should I just stop getting myself nuts and forgo the shot? NoI am not pregnant yet, we are currently TTC.

I was at the podiatrist this morning. At least the patients weren't coughing, etc.--mostly just not walking. I will FM you my dr.'s #--he is in Suffolk.

I am a pharmaceutical rep for Roche and we have the only oral antiflu (antiviral) on the market right now that you could take prophylllaxis and treatment. Ask your Doctor to write a Tamiflu prescription for you and fill it if you are exposed to anyone who has the flu. I have gotten 40 calls from doctors in the city trying to get samples. Hope this helps. And actually the flu is serious, if it is Type A, if you have asthma or COPD, are a child or elderly, you could develop complications.

I have never once gotten a flu shot and never once gotten the flu.

I personally think people should leave the flu shots for people who REALLY need it like old people and babies... there is a shortage going on right now.

Me too!! I have never had a flu shot and never got the flu either. I have seen more people get the flu after they get the shot. I just take my chances

I agree old people and babies, AND HEALTH CARE WORKERS! I am coughed on, sneezed on etc all winter long. It gets me mad that when I ask I am yelled at by these places I have called, like they do not believe me. And I have asthma too!

Right nwo there'a s hortage, so I don't know. i'll check if my dr's office has flu shots yet, and I'll let you know.

I got a flu shot for the first time last year, and I know they say it can't give you the flu...but it gave me the flu really abd for 2 weeks, but then i didn't get the flu again, so it was pretty good.

I have never gotten a flu shot either, but I was at the allergist today, and he is MAKING (well, HIGHLY suggested ) that I get the flu shot this weekend, because of my Asthma which has gotten worse this past month. I have been waking up at 3:30am with asthma attacks, and he said I need to get the shot b/c there can be complications with the Flu, and asthma paitients....

are there side effects with the flu shot?

I also work in a Medical Group & have an appt to get the flu shot in a few weeks.

Does anyone know anything about the Flumist vacciene? We just got memos todaythat most insurance companies are now going to cover this because of the shortage. Anyone ever use this?

Re: FLU SHOTS! NEED OPINIONS

I actually work in one of those places that had 1500 people line up for a flu shot. I have gotten one for the past 3 or 4 years since our company offered it to all the employees. There is not enough of the vaccine and unless you really need it you should try to get it. Let the people who really need it have access to it. We are actually having another clinic this weekend and they expect close to 2000 people to show up but we were notified today that we are only allowed to get enough vacine for 100 shots. Can you all see a riot breaking out???

With the rationing b/c of the shortage there's not much to do. They are only allowing the elderly, preg. women in 1st trimester, people with immune problems and babies to get it. Anyone else - stay away from sick people, up the vitamin intake and pray!

ETA: I guess anyone that works with sick people (doctor's nurse's hospital workers and doctor's office staff) can get it too?

Maybe after the holidays if any are left over you can get the shot??

Re: FLU SHOTS! NEED OPINIONS

At my last job, they offered free flu shots to their employees. I wasn't going to get one, but people from my department dragged me along. Wouldn't you know, I ended up getting very sick after I got the shot.

The following year when the shot was offered, I didn't get one. And I didn't get sick either.

I think it is important that the people who could be most affected by the flu receive priority over young, relatively healthy individuals. The elderly and those with compromised immune systems should be given preference IMO.

I have heard that doctors can prescribe alternatives to the flu vaccine. Is that something you can look into?

Re: FLU SHOTS! NEED OPINIONS

Yes there is an alternative....

And flumist is contraindicated in asthmatics. you cant take it.
