I am going to be going on a plane this weekend to see friends in Florida, for a few days, I flew in February on a chartered flight for a cruise in Miami, but I am starting to freak out and my mind is playing games on me- I still cannot get 9-11 out of my head nor can I get the resent war out of my head. I kept telling myself on the last flight, that we were all screened by the cruise ship, but nothing is helping me this time around!!! My sister keeps telling me that people fly every day, etc. Any words of wisdom or words to calm me down???

Maybe you can have a drink to calm your nerves before you get on the flight. If you are really really bad, perhaps your dr could give you something to calm you. I have to admit I hate flying too because of what happened. If I have to fly,I will but I dread it.

I always get nervous before a flight too. I hate takeoff and I try to keep myself occupied by reading a magazine or book. Don't stress yourself....enjoy your trip.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. FH just started working on a new project that requires him to travel a lot (he gets back from England today). I am NOT happy about this; I told him I don't like him traveling this much because I'm so afraid that something will happen to him. I've never been afraid of flying (I'm a licensed pilot) but ever since 9/11 I am......
I guess all I can say is that you can't let the fear control you.

Your sister is correct. Thousands and Thousands of people fly everyday all over the World. And truth be told, thousands of people were flying on the morning of 9/11 and while tragic only a few planes had problems. I am NOT diminishing what happened, trust me I still have nightmares from that day BUT in the overall scheme of things hundreds of plans landed safely that day. So you can try to calm yourself by reminding yourself that planes take off and land everyday without an incident.

I fly quite a bit. After 9/11, I was quite nervous - especially when I had to take a trip this year on 9/11 and another trip just before the war started.
I would tell you to keep yourself occupied with a book or something else that will take your mind off of flying. The take-off and landing are the hardest part for me so I try to make sure I have something to keep me occupied before we take off. If I start reading as soon as I get on the plane and I'm tired, sometimes I can fall asleep before the plane leaves the ground.
Also, the security procedures are much better today than they were before 9/11.
Take a few deep breaths, relax and don't worry.
Hope this helps.

Xanax and a shot of vodka.
No seriously - when a flight is really bumpy, I'll order a drink or two...and I think you get drunker in the air than on the ground b/c of the pressurization. And guess what? After 2 leetle glasses of wine, I could care less if the **** thing bumps around. The only bad part is a WICKED bad headache once we're on the ground again. Ugh.

Princess I totally sympathize! I am flying this weekend too and am flipping out myself. I am so afraid of flying -- it's really really bad. I plan on taking some sleeping pills -- the last time I flew I took them and although I didn't fall asleep they made me groggy.

If you really think you will freak out on board you can ask your doctor for a tranquilizer. My dad has to take one every time he flies (even before 9-11) and it helps a lot.

I travel a lot for work, actually had to take a plane less than 2 weeks after 9/11. You do not need to worry, the security in airports is so much better than in the old days, they search everything and have lots of security checks. If you are really worried, take a sleeping pill and nap during the flight. Another thing I do is watch the stewardesses-sometimes we hit turbulence and I get freaked, it always relaxes me to see them walking around totally calm. I figure they do this every day, so if they are calm then everything will be OK. Enjoy your trip!
