FMIL crossed the line!!! What would u do?

Original post by AeroJenn

Several weeks ago she asked how many people we were looking at for the rehearsal dinner. I said 20 (that includes both sets of parents, the BP, one set of grandparents, my hair/makeup person & her husband--they are like family to me, and my mom's best friend for Cali who is also like family and flying in a week early to help out). She called today to tell me that since they are paying for it, they arent inviting the last two couples I mentionned because they arent family or in the BP. I explained that I wanted them there and wouldnt feel right if they werent. She went on to say that its adding up to more than they wanted to spend and the place is kind of expensive, so they just wont be inviting them. I replied by saying 'well...they have to be there. I would suggest then that you look at cheaper restaurants.' WELL -- she comes back with: Ed and I are paying for it -- sorry, they arent being invited.' I said-- 'I will be talking to chris (my FH)about this then...we need to discuss it first' So she says...heres the killer-- 'No....I will be talking to Chris and find out what HE wants' Ummmm excuse me! Does she think he will go against my wishes???? And my parents (who were in a much worst financial situation) paid for the e-party which was 70 people -- most of them were HER family, not mine!

I just cannot fathom not having these 2 couples there -- they mean so much to me and are travelling far to be with us. i cant imagine telling them 'no, you have to eat on your own'. Thats horrible. I'm almost contemplating telling her 'thanks for the offer, I'll pay for and plan it myself'. What a b**tch!

What would u do??

Oh--forgot to mention-- she claims she asked around and she was told that no one but the BP and immediate family should be attending and that only people who directly helped plan the wedding should be there. Well, in that case NONE of them should be there! The groomsmen and bridesmaid didnt help plan at all and neither did the fathers!

oh my gosh we went through this with my mil also.. she didnt want to pay for the extra guests that just had to be there.

at that point i had my dh talk to her, i was done and i realized that the only one she was going to listen to was DH.

I totally cut ties with her.

mil was not happy about it, but she sucked it up and paid for it. We told her that if she did not stop, that we would pay for it ourselves and she would not be invited. she decided to suck it up. lucky her!

First of all.....MODERN tradition states that OOT guests be invited to give them something to do the night before and to kind of express thanks for the travelling they've done.

SECOND....well....you've solved it...she can have her own party while you guys plan your own if it's such an issue. Good for your FH for backing you up!!!!

You can offer to pay for your guests. I have a feeling a similar issue is going to arise when our RD rolls around because I have aunts coming in from out of state and I do not want to exclude them.

If my FMIL was that rude though, I would just not go and have pizza over my house with the guest I want to come. I would totally step into bridezilla mode

I also know that you should invite out of town guests to your reception. You FMIL should realize that this is your wedding not her son's only, and should be able to accomodate two more couples. You were even willing to move the dinner to a more affordable restauriant! Sounds like a deeper issue going on here with the FMIL

Good point. I did speak to FH and he backs me 100% I will have him say it so I dont sound like a royal b**tch....

I am happy to here that you FH is behind you on this decision and that you 2 are going to talk to IL's and let them know you are inviting who you want there and that is that!

OMG! What a b*tch! I can't believe she's being so nasty. I'm so glad that your FH is in full agreement with you. Make sure he's forceful that he agrees with you when you have the conversation with his parents. It's YOUR RD, not theirs, and she needs to realize that. And if they won't pay for the 2 extra couples, then tell her you'll pay for them yourselves. Maybe then she'll see how ridiculous she's being. Good luck!
