Is there a problem with getting a dress 'off the rack'?? My WEDDING dress is off the rack- my mother AND FMIL dresses are off the rack- and somehow- I don't think the world will end on MY wedding day because we didn't spend THOUSANDS on our dresses. You sound mean, and selfish and should not say a word to her.

Mine too!!! Wedding dress that is... off the rack on clearance and all for $5 plus i had some of it remade but the seamstress charge is minimal... I was worried I was the only one who got one off the rack but couldn't help it I LOVED it...

I am far from mean, just concerned as she has not even gone to look for a dress. I don't care if she spends $10.00 on a dress so long as she looks presentable. My problem is that she was on my back for months about my mothers dress and when I gave her the info about my moms dress she could care less and hasn't done a damn thing.

I dont think there is anything wrong with going to Macys or Penny's for a MOG/MOB dress. Both stores have some beautiful dresses. My wedding is 4 months away and there are three mothers involved (MOG, MOB and Step-MOB) none of them have even started shopping yet! I wouldnt worry. I am sure she will look fine for your wedding.

I know I will get badgered for this one, but in no way shape or form would I ever tell my mother or his mother what they can and cant wear to my wedding. They are adults, they can make their own decisions, whatever they wear is fine with me...in fact, I think they are both wearing black...which is also the color of my bridesmaid dresses.....no biggie...as long as they are comfortable. Sometimes with the wedding, we just need to loosen the reigns a little bit and trust people to dress themselves appropriately...nobody will even remember what the mothers wear at the end of the night...they will all just remember you and your FH and the wedding itself. Dont stress...it will all work out1

You can find nice dresses off the rack. Im my mothers 4th child getting married and this will be the 4th time she is buying something off the rack. All four of these weddings she had beautiful dresses. Dont sweat it you can find alot of nice gowns especially if she is not heavy.

Ok, so FMIL was harassing me about my mothers dress color. We told her a month ago. She still hasn't gotten a dress. The wedding is in 2 months and she hasn't even looked. She told FH that she was going to go to Pennies or Macy's for her dress. WHAT!!! Her first born and only son is getting married and she is getting adress off the rack?!?!?!?!? Is this normal? Do I say something or just let her get what she wants? I need to order her crosage and she said to get her white roses. I DON'T think so.

sounds like my FMIL. do not stress it, it is NOT normal. if she wants to buy off the rack, that is her problem

Don't stress it. It's your day- as long as you're happy with your dress, why worry about you're FMIL? I started to..like when my FMIL bought a BLACK off the rack dress- (that I still haven't seen!) In my family- you only wear black to the son/daughter's wedding- if you don't want them to be married, which I told her a year ago..but I decided..I DON'T CARE.

Let her be stressed looking for something and getting it in time. Not your problem.

My mom got her dress off the rack at Estelle's and my MIL got her dress off the rack at Lord and Taylor.

Guess what? We had the best wedding ever.

You will worry about so many other silly things for your wedding day. Don't worry about you mother buying a dress from Macy's. I hope for your sake that this is the biggest of your worries in life.

Good luck

We just got my mom's dress three weeks ago. My FMIL bought hers before my mom (at my insistence b/c I know my mom's a last minute gal).

It was really freaking stressful.

At least this is your FMIL. Not your mom, not your problem. Screw her.

As long as she finds something nice then I don't think it should be matter that it's off the rack.

Seriously - my mum got her dress off the rack at Penney's.

My FMIL got her dress of the rack at Macy's...for the wedding of her first born son...

That part I can understand - but your post doesn't say that is all you are concerned about. You question whether buying off the rack is normal and insinuate that it's not.

this falls under the category of 'not your problem'....don't stress it--its HER responsibility to get a dress...and not yours. so don't get upset over something you don't have to!

and there really isn't anything wrong with buying 'off the rack' at all. to be totally honest thre was NO WAY that i was gonna let my mom have to special order a MOB gown for like $300-500 that she will only wear once. both my mom and my MIL bought 'off the rack' at Estelle's -- had them altered by my seamstress and looked fantastic.

I think its more common for mothers to buy at a non bridal type store than at one. I wouldnt worry about it. My mom bought off the rack and her dress was beautiful! Dont stress it. :)

i wouldnt have a problem if my mom or Fhs mom bought off the rack...first of all it is a lot cheaper, you dont have to worry about it not being in on time and if she likes it and looks good in it what is the big deal???

Re: FMIL Dress

Your FMIL is not going to show up to your wedding naked. And if you find the dress she picks hideous- OH WELL. SHE needs to feel comfortable and beautiful in the dress- not you.

Re: FMIL Dress

To be honest, I admit I was a little worried about FMIL's dress because she's from the midwest, has never been to a LI wedding, and my mom wanted a glam 'wow-factor' MOB dress. I didn't want my mom to look ridiculous or for FMIL to look really out of place and underdressed.

I ended up going dress shopping with FMIL and she bought a Jovani sample dress.... off the rack! I couldn't be happier. My mom's dress is spectacular and both will be beautiful

One of FH's grandmothers is wearing a dress from Macys that was on clearance for something like $16 - it's not my taste but she's comfortable in it and likes it and in the scheme of things it's not that important
