FMIL Vent

FMIL Vent

Is anyone else having this type of trouble with their FMIL?

FMIL has been told that. traditionally, the mother of the bride picks her wedding attire first and then lets the mother of the groom know what she is wearing. Then, the mother of the groom picks an outfit that is complimentary, so as not to clash with the mother of the bride.

FMIL decided that she wanted to start looking at dresses, which is fine. She asked if David's Bridal (where I went to look for Bridesmaid Dresses) had mother of bride/groom dresses. I said yes. She went there to look at dresses, decided they looked too matronly, and proceeded to try on BRIDESMAID dresses in the SAME COLOR I want my girls to wear.

But it doesn't end there! My mother called her to get input on my shower. FMIL wants to have it on Memorial Day weekend, which is a terrible idea as we have family coming in from out of town and they will be sitting in hours of traffic. During that conversation, my mother told her that she saw a navy blue dress that she loved at Macy's in Manhasset. So what does FMIL do? She goes to Macy's in Manhasset and buys a NAVY BLUE DRESS!

I had to tell my mother and she was so hurt. I have no idea what to do/say. Is this normal behavior?

HELP!

Tough situation. I don't have any good advice in this situation. FMIL are just that if she is someone you can talk to maybe try that.

Re: FMIL Vent

My FMIL asked if my mom picked her color because she wanted to match. umm W T F??? She said she did that for her daughter. I told her no but we will see what happens- What is with these fmil. Plus she really doesn't need to have much say in the shower I feel. That is for the bride your mom should do it when is best for you and your family and go from there!!!

I would tell her to return her dress. (I know easier said than done!)

Re: FMIL Vent

Macy's allows you to return your dress for up to 6 months from the date of purchase, so that may be an option. What an uncomfortable conversation to have!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a wacky FMIL.

I hate when people do things like this. I think it's them having to have the spot light and be noticed. it's frustrating. I wish i had some advice for you

Re: FMIL Vent

Oh man I asked FMIL not to get white/black or blue (the color of my wedding) so she went and got a navy blue dress. I was like *** that's blue?!?! but whatever. My problem now is that FMIL thinks $1000 is a 'good price' for a mother of the groom dress, and my mom wants to buy hers off ebay for $75. UGH what to do?! Our families are from different worlds.....

AKA I'm marrying rich

I never even anticipated these problems would exist!

Aww I'm sorry to hear your having these problems. I think FMIL is COMPLETELY WRONG!! How dare she buy the dress, or a similar dress, your mom said she wanted. The mother of the bride always picks her dress out first and she has no right doing that, at least that's what I've always seen. FH needs to have a talk w/ her and tell her to knock off the ****!

Re: FMIL Vent

I told both my Mom and my FMIL when i decided on Green for the BM's i didnt care what color either of them wore as long as it wasnt white or any type of green.

They both understood, but i also put it like this '(FMIL)..I dont think you should wear green, the bridesmaids are wearing green and you should stand out, your a VIP! wear something that makes you feel pretty and special'.

I think its all about HOW you approach a situation..and plus i nip that s**t in the bud before it began

Re: FMIL Vent

Who cares what color she wears in reality. All eyes will be on you and FH. I don't think it would be a big deal if your mom purchased a navy blue dress. It would actually look nice that the moms are in accordance. IMO.
Don't stress the small stuff..
