Can you believe this??! My FMIL turns to me the other day ( of course when my FH wasnt around) and goes ' how are you planning this wedding for so cheap?? '
Me - ' SO CHEAP?!?!? Its costing us about $28k
Shes like well my niece got married last year and they spend over 50k and it was soo nice.. you are spending so much less.. I hope it doesnt look cheap. And I hope at least the food is good, or I wouldnt even bother!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I was soooo mad!!!
The only thing I could think to say without blowing up was that 28k is alot of money and she planned her wedding in 8mos. I had 2 years.. plus she had her parents check book to cover anything and everything.
I then tried to explain to her that just b/c you spend alot of $$ dosent make the wedding nice.. you can have a nicer wedding for 15k then you can for 50k ( and girls on here have proved it!) but she just dosent get it

wow, id be annoyed....

just because she spent the extra money doesnt mean it was better... she may have overpaid on vendors, and also you planning in advance makes you able to get lower prices locked in...

Maybe if your FMIL is so worried about her son's wedding looking 'cheap' she should write you a check !! - Scary sometimes, the things FMILs think they have the 'right' to say to you. - You did the right thing-

With all of the rude things you say to people on this board, it is not surprising that you are surrounded by rude people in your personal life.

Pay her no mind Max. Anyway, wtf is up with your FMIL! What a jerk! If SHE isn't forking over the cash she can use it to stuff her pie hole. Your wedding is obviously going to all the more beautiful for this nasty comment so don't sweat it.

holy cow, I can feel and relate to your pain like u don't even know!!! my fmil has already stated, about 2 years ago, 'I'll probably wind up paying for the whole thing.' meaning my wedding. now keep in mind, at that point she was working as a file clerk in a lawyers office for $8 an hour!!!! she needs to have everyone think that she has millions, she basically lives way beyond her means. i'm sure as we get closer to the wedding i'll run into more problems with her. she keeps saying that she's saving money so she can 'help us out' which i think is total bulls***. I could go on all day, but i think y'all get the idea. thanks for the post!!! and please hang in there, girl, it will get better I'm sure.

I feel for you. My FMIL is a church lady and feels we shouldn't spend either. She's not paying so why should she worry? I know what you're going through. Don't worry.

that was pretty rude of her some people just have no class. but i agree that yuou dont have to spend loads of money to have a elegant wedding you just have to have style and taste and knowing how to shop doesnt hurt. my cousin spend well over 100 grand on her wedding and it was a lovely wedding but i have gone to other weddings where they didnt spend anywhere near that and had a better time. your wedding will be amazing dont listen to anyone.
