I think it depends on the outfit - if it's not a festive type dress (i.e., if it looks like a funeral outfit) then no. But if it's nice, personally I don't see a problem.
My best friend's mom wore a black gown with lace to her wedding and it looked very beautiful and elegant.

My Mom is and I am sure my FMIL is going to also. At first I was a little iffy about it because my BP is wearing black, but honestly I think it looks amazing

Both our mothers did beacuse we had a black & white wedding and they wanted to wear the same color of the BP. It was nice she ashed your permission! Black is very formal & very elegant!

I think black rocks, I wear it to all weddings so why can't our mom's or future mom in laws. It makes everyone look great. And imo I think it matches w everything too so in pics it will look good.

it's very pretty and i love the dress... i don't mind her wearing black.
the BP is in pink and the guys in black & gray... she wanted to match her son - originally she wanted brown but thought it would look bad in pics...

My mom is wearing black. She wanted to but was afraid to ask because she didn't want it to be taken as a bad thing. I told her to wear it! We are having a black tie wedding and I think it is more than appropriate.

I've been to a few weddings where the moms wear black and they've looked great. I don't think it's a big deal anymore. More and more BMs are wearing black, so why can't moms.
My grandma was telling my mother that the custom used to be that the brides mom wore pink and the grooms blue. My mom mentioned she's looking into green (for my fall wedding) and grandma was shocked. She said, 'what? You're not wearing pink?' LOL...ah, the old traditions.

my mom found a beautiful dress in black. we really wanted to find a dress for her in color but we may end up getting the balck dress anyway b/c it looked amazing on her!
