Hello Ladies, What happens when you don't like your FMIL's dress? My FMIL and I get along great. Yesterday she showed me her 'options' and I hate every one of them. I gave her a swatch of the color yesterday but what she showed me was totally off. My colors are plum and silver. She showed me a lalic suit, a green suit and a hot pink suit. I'm thinking of just buying her a dress myself. But I'm not sure how she would take it. Any advice?

Do you specifically want her in your colors? Lilac is a shade of purple so it may be nice for her to be different but still in the same color family. Maybe she feels more comfortable with a suit and that's why she didn't choose dresses? If you get along well, I'd just tell her your concerns.
I was in a wedding on Friday and the Bridesmaids were in champagne and the maid of honor in taupe, MOB in brown and I thought it looked really good that the MOB didn't match us perfectly, but was still in the same color family. My bridesmaid dresses will be plum and my mom got a navy dress. I hate that! I wanted her to do lilac or purple. But it was a battle I chose not to fight since I have so many others. Good luck!

I think the hot pink will be too much. Also, your FMIL doesn't necessary have to match but she needs to look like she is part of the wedding. I suggest you offer to go going dress shopping with her.
The lilac should go nicely. What colors would you like to see her in? My instructions to my FMIL were no pink or navy, but you need to complement the pinks (her daughter and granddaughters will be wearing pinks).

Thank you for making me lol at my desk! That was the best line i've seen all day!!!!
My FMIL refuses to look for a dress yet because she feels it's the only thing she has to do for the wedding and once that is over she will have nothing to look forward to... I was like ummmmmm lets see.. how about looking forward to THE WEDDING! ps.. it's not the only thing she has to do.. she's helping my mom with the shower and I've involved her in EVERYTHING! ugh..

I dont think she should have to match your girls. Just let her wear whatever she wants. If she looks silly in hot pink, she'll look silly, not you

I don't think she should have to match either. My colors were pink and black, My mom wore red, and my mother in law wore black w/ green. They both looked nice, and were happy and comfotable, and that's all that matters.

I dont think that they necessarily have to match but I think my fmil picked this particular shade of green for a reason. She knows how much I HATE green and for some reason she has something to say about EVERYTHING we decide to do about the wedding. So the one thing that she actually had a say in she made sure I hated. Whatever. I'm still gonna look good

If she doesn't match and looks like a tool, it's her own dang fault. Carry on!

Personally I'm sick and tired of hearing about my fmil & fsil's dresses. I completely turn off in conversation because I don't care that much.

This matching to the bridal party thing never occurred to me. My mom isnt going to match my bridal party at all.I guess if you want her to match then go with the lilac.

FMIL's Dress
My FMIL is wearing a dress from the back of her closet that she got on clearance. I haven't seen this dress and don't even know what color it is, let alone whether or not it matches anything.

You just made me LOL I agree! My FMIL asked if it's ok if she wore black....BLACK!!!! Ughhhh then she wanted to buy a plain black dress and put beads on it herself...WTH??? Just buy a nice dress & thats it! She is going dress shopping today - let's see what happens....she does not like to spend too much money...oh boy. If my colors are deep red & silver (my mother will hopefullly wear silver), which color should FMIL's dress be?

It doesn't really matter much to me what my FAIL (future aunt in law, FH parents both passed when he was pretty young so his aunt and uncle took care of him after. Kind of funny that its fail, she's not a fail though she's great). As long as what she chooses looks flattering on her ill be happy. Looking like she matches the bridal party is not necessary for me.
