FML

FML

I'm sure you ladies have all had problems with your guest list. Here's mine. Our plan from the very beginning was a small wedding with only people we actually interact with on a regular basis. But from the start FMIL was whining about her 8 college friends and how they HAVE to be invited because she was invited to their kids weddings. She said it was embarrassing (so we have to invite people that we barely talk to because YOU don't want to be embarrassed?)

We told her no and she basically kept guilt tripping FH every time they saw each other. It was happening so often that he got sick of it and eventually we caved in. It was a very hard decision for us but in the end he said it would bring peace so i said okay, because his parents offered to pay for them. But I knew that it wasn't the end, because us saying yes to them would open the door for more requests.

Within 5 minutes of us telling FMIL she could invite her friends she says 'now, what about the 'Smiths'?' (another family we barely see) I could not BELIEVE she had the nerve to ask that!! FH immediately said 'we don't want it to get crazy.'

Of course that wasn't the end of it, and yesterday she told him to 'just think' about inviting them. I basically told him to take care of it, because I wasn't going to go through this again. I told him not to talk to me about it anymore. I don't want to invite any more people I don't know to my wedding!!

So frustrating!

i know exactly where you're coming from ... i wanted FMIL to invite 70 people ... she invited 85 ...

but ultimately, my FMIL (just like yours) is paying for those people.

i know exactly where your frustration is coming from ... but just be positive .... if you allow her to invite a few extra people, it'll make your life slightly less stressful, and hopefully the people will give you nice gifts.

if it really bothers you though, then maybe you should consider a destination wedding so that fewer people will be able to make it?

i completely agree with you! i would put my foot down and stop inviting people you don't know at the wedding, and make sure they pay for these guest that you were not going to invite initially since you don't even know them!

This sounds just like my FMIL!! My in-laws through our engagement party for us and I specifically said I only wanted close friends and family but they invited all their neighbors and people I've never even met. FH and I couldn't say much because they paid for the party, but now we're forced to invite them to the wedding!!!

I just keep telling myself...I'm marrying my best friend and that's all that matters!! Even if we go broke from our huge guest list

Re: FML

I have this problem w/ my mom-she keeps inviting ppl-all her friends, her whole office (even though I'm not inviting my co-workers!)... she keeps adding ppl to the guest list. My parents are paying so she keeps holding that over my head everytime she adds ppl to the guest list. But I feel like there will be more of my parents friends than my own friends at my wedding!

I don't have any problems w/ FILs-they don't have ANYONE to add to the guest list (FH put all family on his list). My mom keeps hounding me like I'm excluding FMILs friends or something. My FIL's don't really keep in touch w/ their old friends anymore. They run a business (plus FFIL has been fighting cancer for a few yrs now) so they are soo busy w/ that that they don't really have any friends anymore. When they aren't working they keep to themselves or go visit family. My mom acts like I'm LYING to her or something- she actually called FMIL to find out if she has ppl that she wants to add to the shower list (and FMIL didn't lol).

I think u should just make sure FILs pay for all of the ppl that they add to the guest list. I learned from fighting w/ my mom that u can't tell them no. Apparently my moms friend that I barely know (and don't really like) already bought a dress for my wedding- before I even knew she was invited!!

omg I'd be pissed!

Okay I guess it could be worse. Normally I like FMIL but weddings bring all sorts of drama. Feel kind of sad because my family can't afford to just pay for whomever they want to come. But my parents say they're okay with the guest list so far. It just seems wrong when we decided not to invite relatives we don't ever see (like my dad's half-brother and his family), meanwhile these people show up >:[ I would rather invite family over random friends!

On the other hand, we don't talk to those relatives so maybe they wouldn't feel like they're missing much? AAAGH SO TORTURED

Whatever, I'm still getting married. :)

Re: FML

The guest list is an issue. We are paying everything ourselves and his family seems annoyed that my family is larger and keeps inventing people to invite. I'm so done.
