FML FMIL

I ALMOST just said to FMIL 'if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.'

I just had my hair done. Instead of getting highlights like I should have, I opted for a color touchup. My hair looks kind of caramel-ish, but it doesn't look bad, just different.

She looks at me and says,' Ooo your hair, it's... different... nice... well, I don't know, maybe no... maybe ok, ehhhh it's nice, ehhhh changes your entire face, ehhhh it's ok, nice nice beautiful.'
I know she said 'beautiful' at the end because she saw my face which basically said W T F.

WHAT IS THAT??? I can't with her backhanded compliments.

or tell her she can now remove the foot from her mouth

Actually no, I would look like an old hag, nevermind, but you look AWESOME today!'

A couple of Christmases ago, FH's aunt, my favorite of his family members, said that I looked very nice. She's a sweetheart, no backhand-edness. Then FMIL says something to her in Greek and the aunt responds in English, 'No she looks great! She doesn't need to lose weight!' (or something along those lines)

I was so mad.

Everyone thinks she's so sweet, and yes, she's a very nice person, but the things she says really bug me out. Like how can she get away with saying these things??? UGH

I wonder the same thing!!! I work with my FMIL and she even says sh!t like that to our co-workers and she gets away with it! It boggles my mind!

people are incredibly rude.
