Follow up: ETA: Someone stole my Identity!!

Original post by juju

I am so pissed! With less than 3 weeks before my wedding, I have to deal with this crap!!! I feel so violated!!!

So Friday, I get a bill in the mail for emergency services that I never had at New Island Hospital!!! I am so pissed off. When I called the billing dept. they confirmed my Date of Birth and Social Security. Someone stole my info!!! She was in there for dizziness. So now, the police are on their way to get a report from me. I want to make sure I call all the right agencies. Has this ever happened to anyone? Who did you Call to make sure this person has not already opened up credit lines in my name?

ETA: Thanks everyone!! This is definetly an eye opener. But, I feel foolish because about 1 hr. ago, I put 2 and 2 together and I think I know what happened. My father asked me 'Didn't Greg take you to the emergency room?' I thought my dad was confusing greg with my ex b/c my ex had taken me years ago previously. So I told him, ' I have never been to that Hospital!' Okay, I kept thinking of my daddy's words. And yes, I went tothat hospital 4 years ago and yes, there is another Judy who Lives in LI. So what probably happened was that this 'Judy' went to the emergency and the hospital mistakenly got my info from the computer. I am almost positive this is what happened. Of course, I need to check with the Hospital first thing in the morning, I already called police. I am so upset b/c I hope I don't have problems when I need to get credit check. I am so upset with the Hospital. I was so stressed this weekend thinking about it.

This happened to me. if you go to the equifax website, you can put an alert on your SSN for 9wks. basically it prevents any line of credit to be opened up in your name. Equifax alerts the other two bureaus once you do this so you don't have to worry about calling the other two. after the 9 wks, if you want, you can put something more perm. on your SSN.
the alert basically says that there is possible fraud occuring with your SSN.

i would recommend doing that.....

This sucks! I would contact the hospital directly and speak with the someone in charge there and tell them what happened. Always follow up in writing them a letter telling them what happened and that you have reported it to the police and to place this letter in their file because they will be sending you stuff for payment of this person medical treatment which, if not paid, could go on your credit report.

Also, like everyone has said above, get the names of everyone you speak with, write letters to all three credit bureaus with police report attached and have them send you a confirmation of their receipt. I would send the letters certified mail/return receipt.

Unfortunately, this happened to my sister and she did not take the appropriate steps and she now, five years later is trying to clear her credit report. So..don't wait and make sure every phone call is followed up in writing. I know it sucks, but better safe than sorry.

That happened to me in October.. instead someone used all my info. to open credit card accounts at Sears, Nordstrom and Home Depot. They charged almost $8,000 to those stores. Nordstrom was so on top of everything and they actually caught someone a couple of days later trying to use the temporary card. It was such a hassle! It was such a violating feeling!

I can't imagine the stress you must be feeling over this. That's the only good thing about having a last name like mine... no one has the same name as me!! Anyone who has the same last name is related! No chance of mistaken identity. LOL.
