Fondont or Buttercream outside?

Fondont or Buttercream outside?

Hi I am trying to decide between bakers, one wants to make our wedding cake using fondant and two want to make our cake from buttercream. From what we have heard buttercream is much tastier and we have tried buttercream and really liked it allot. The baker who wants to make the cake from fondant is the best of the three bakers and his cakes were really good. We are just nervous about fondant. He says he adds flavored oil to the fondant to make it taste good and is sending me a sample of it this week. Does anyone have an opinion between fondant and buttercream? One reason why we may have to go with fondant is because we are having our wedding outside and the cake will be outside the entire time. The wedding is late afternoon into late evening in mid June on the ocean. What do you think? Will buttercream hold up? Thanks!

My bridal shower cake was fondant and it was the sweetest best tasting fondant I have ever tasted! The baker put buttercream on the bottom so the fondant 'sutck' to buttercream...man was it yummy! I say taste it, I bet it'll be delicious!

Well, I've heard fondant is usually not very tasty, but it is much more visually appealing. Buttercream tastes good, but doesn't have that smooth, polished look.

So it depends what you want. The fondant is usually more $$$, and I've heard it can't be refrigerated, which might be a concern if you are having a wedding during the summer. I may go with buttercream for that reason myself, though I want to ask my baker about this.

SomethingBlu...who did you cake? That is exactly how the baker said he was going to do the fondant with buttercream holding it on. Glad you had a good expierence with it. Was your fondadnt plain or mixed with anything?

Fondant when done right can very yummy or just awful. Definitely wait for the sample from the baker to decide. Very few bakers can actually do tasty fondant right - though it does look pretty.

Neither -- go with fresh whipped cream! That's what we had and it was delicious!

My cake was made by Villabate...it was DELICIOUS! Here are pics:

I highly recommend fondant, if made right, because nothing else will withstand the elements, especially since your cake wil be outside.

we had fondant with buttercream under it. Most bakers told me that the guests will simply remove it from teh cake (the buttercream allows it to come right off. I have tasted it and its really not that bad.
