Re: food tasting you have to pay for it?????
My brother had the same problem, only they'd pay for him and his FW, but not our parents, he basocally said it wasnt acceptable, and they were paying for 200 dinners so the least they could do was treat his family to dinner... thye called him back and said okay.

I have been told at a few places they don't do tastings and you can go to their restaurant to try the food. I was annoyed at that because I agree you are going to spend a LOT of money there so the least htey can do is offer up some food for free.

no, but when I went to the food tasting for thachted cottage I am surprised that they didn't. Because they served a full 3 course meal for 3 people including alcohol !! We at least gave a generous tip for the waiter.

Re: food tasting you have to pay for it?????
we don't have to pay for ours, it's part of choosing the menu.
I was pretty turned off by places that didn't do a food tasting. One place actually said 'well, we're known for our good food, so you don't need to taste it.'
I just thought that was obnoxious - just because THEY think I don't need to try the food doens't mean I think I don't need to try the food! Besides, the point for us is that when you choose the menu, you try a little of your options so you're not just choosing blind. That's the way I think it should be done.

I have only heard of that once - at the Castle in Tarrytown. I have to admit, I find that shocking.

YOU DO PAY!! Most are RH's will be getting at least $15K or more from msot of us.... But seriously, most places don't charge... it's how they sell their place to people... and in the end, we pay for that anyway with the insane cost of the wedding anyway!

We had 5 people and did not pay. It was an AMAZING tasting too. $100s worth of food. We booked on the spot.

Re: food tasting you have to pay for it?????
I heard that more places are doing this now because some brides go from tasting to tasting and these places are losing out on money for the tasting when they don't book. A few bad apples ruin it for all of us I had the same problem - I was 100% certain about the hall but I wanted to taste the food before I officially booked. I had such a hard time convincing them that I was serious about booking. Finally, the agreed to give me a tasting with the condition that I pay a deposit without signing a contract prior to the tasting and I agree to walk away from the money if I didn't like the tasting and didn't book. I was so stressed out about this! Good thing I ended up liking the food! Things have changed - catering halls are not giving tastings out so easily anymore.

Didn't have to pay at CHateau La Mer or East Wind!
I was just about to post this Jean! But yeah, when I did the tasting for Jean last year, it was completely free and there was a lot of food!! And at East Wind it was free too and we had 6 people!! I also had a tasting at the Thatched Cottage and that too was free.
Try bargaining with the people- ask if there is anyway not to pay since you will be investing a lot of money in the place! Good Luck!

Re: food tasting you have to pay for it?????
My friend is getting married at Jericho Terrace and they don't have a restaurant either. She was given a free meal - i guess there was a wedding going on, I'm not sure - they just sat her in a different room.

Re: food tasting you have to pay for it?????
We had our tasting when we booked Jericho Terrace. They said we could bring whoever we wanted but my DH and I decided to go alone. When we arrived they served EVERYTHING under the sun, from appetizers to dessert and it was FREE!!
It does seem very weird especially if you already booked with them. A food tasting should automatically be offered to you. You are spending thousands of dollars to have your wedding there and they want you to pay $50 per person for a tasting??? I'm sorry but they have a lot of nerve to even put a price on a food tasting!
I would threaten them by telling them I would cancel my affair if they do not offer the tasting for free. Why book with them and pay money out of your pocket to taste their food!?!? Food is VERY important when it comes to booking a hall and most people base their decision on the food. I would give them total hell, I'm sorry but that would totally tick me off!!
