Can you help me??? I am doing a paper on blindness and wanted to know if anyone can help me undertsnad the play. I know that he was metephorically blind throughout the play trying to go against his fate and at the end he physically blinds himself but thats not helping me. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I remember reading this in high school but can't recall the details. Doesn't something happen with his mother or something like that. I don't remember the story being too long. Did you read it yet? I think it was an interesting story.

i read three different versions about 8 years ago, so i'm not the best of help, but with all three versions, there was a different method of blinding himself. i wish i was of more help b/c i actually wrote a paper on this, but that's all i came up with. good luck!

Yes, so he could physically see throughout the play, but was blind to the truth of his parentage (you know he was married to his mother and had killed his father without realizing); however he was counseled about his history by a blind prophet named Tieresias who told him the truth and warned him that the 'killer' (of the former king, Laius, his real father) he sought was, in fact, himself. Well, Oedipus went crazy on him and threw him out because he was in denial. So the irony here is that although physically blind, Tieresias could 'see.' Then at the end when the truth is revealed, Oedipus blinds himself as a punishment basically and the irony here is that although physically blind, he now can 'see' the truth at last.

Wow, that was long! I read this play 3x this year--I teach HS seniors!!
