For DaniRN...about nursing as a profession

Hi DaniRN,

I'm considering a career change into nursing from educational administration. I work at NYU and they have a BSN program that can be completed at night and weekends. Do NYU nurses have a good rep? Also, I'm 31 now, and wouldn't be finished until I'm 35 - do you think this is too old for a new nurse to begin? (I know it is physically and mentally exhausting work and I don't want to be burned out as soon as I begin). Thanks!

Re: For DaniRN...about nursing as a profession

I don't know much about NYU nurses-I work in Suffolk and went to nursing school up by Rochester but I know NYU is a great school. I don't think you are too old at all to begin nursing-especially since there is such a shortage now. I would recommend starting out as a med-surg nurse for at least 2 years to get good experiences w/ all types of patients. It is very stressful and exhausting work, and yes, there are sometimes when I come home from work and practically cry from exhaustion & stress, but it is also rewarding work. I have been doing this for 4 years now and I do love my job. After you get experience there are soo many areas you can work in that are less demanding (travel nursing, PACU nursing, etc..)
Anyway, I wrote a book, but if you have any other ????'s forum mail me!
Good luck

Thank you Dani! I am so glad to hear I'm not too old - I think I knew I wasn't but wanted to hear it from someone who knows the demands of the job. Thanks again!
