Do you gals work full time? Do you go to school full time? Do you have student loans? I'm trying to figure out the best way to get my masters while still being able to make a life with FH and FSD.

Re: For girls getting their masters...
i got my masters last year (after 3 looong years) and i was working full time, and going for my master full time. i paid for 70% of it in federal student loans and the rest i paid myself and my parents helped (i did go to a private school, so it all depends where u choose to go as well). of course i was single then, i met my FH after finishing school, so it made the logistics of time management and expanses much easier. FM me if u need more advice with this decision

When I got my master's I was working full time and going to school part time. There was also a point in time that I was working full time, working part time, and going to school part time. THAT was tough.
I lived at home until the last semester, when FH and I got our first apartment. Most of the time I'd do my work while he came over and played video games or watched football. It actually became kind of our weekly routine. He'd come over on Sundays and watch football all day while I did my papers/studying.

Re: For girls getting their masters...
I just started my MA and as soon as that is done I'm going on to my PhD. Yikes.
I don't work full time... but I do have four part time jobs and I go to school full time. Plus I'm going to be preparing for the GRE's and applying to PhD programs soon.
Oh right. And planning a wedding. !
It's a LOT to do. Honestly, I wish that I COULD work more, but I have no idea when I would do that without completely falling off dead. Also, some of the schools that I'm looking into for PhD programs don't allow the students to work full-time, so I'd just have to quit in a year and a half anyway.
Luckily, FH makes a decent salary and we're probably going to carve out a little 'apartment' for ourselves in my parents house and live there for a year or two after the wedding.

im going to school for my masters and right now im doing my student teaching. i dont work at all. but FH and i prepared for this semester and put a lot of money to the side so i wouldnt have to work. going to school and working for free is enough- and i still have like NO TIME!

I worked full time....I started going to school full time in the beginning but it was just too much. So I ended up the last year going part time and still working full time. I graduated in December with my MBA and I am so happy to be done!

I work full time and go to school part-time. My masters program is expensive so I needed all loans to cover it. I will have to pay it all back once im done, but i heard loan payments aren't terrible. I am very busy during the week because on top of working and classes I have to intern twice a week for 14 hours total. I am pretty free on weekends so thats when I spend time with FH and friends and family.

Re: For girls getting their masters...
When i got my masters i was going full time and only working pt on the weekends. But i didn't go to a private grad school so the cost was A LOT less then undergrad was since that was private. I'm looking to go back again for a 2nd Masters but i'm going to continue working full time. My 2nd MA should only take me a year tops since i can transfer all my credits over so i'm going to suck it up for a year.

same here. A MA in psych is freaking useless unless it's in school or i/o. Intelligent me got mine in forensic psych so now i'm going to go back for my MA in Mental Health Counseling so i can at least get licensed lol. Psychology SUUUCKS!

Hahha actually entering the lovely world of English! It is a lotttt of work though, and I'm really competitive about school. I'm one of those people who beats herself up about an A- But I LOVE going to class. I tell people that I don't have any hobbies or interests aside from going to class lol
Good luck to you too!!!

Re: For girls getting their masters...
I am going to be VERY honest here...
for the 1st year of my masters i was working full time and interning full time (21 hours) and taking on a full time grad school work load....it was ALOT...i feel like i lost a year of my life...i was never around, always stressed, and working my butt off...i feel like i missed out on ALOT...
this year..i had to rearrange my school sch and therefore had to rearrange my work sch..it was part time work, full time internship and full grad school work load...it still felt the same to me...
then in december i quit my job! wahoooooo(that an entirely different story) and to be honest its still a lot of work..i stilll feel like im missing out...i havent seen fh or some of my girls for that matter...and you know...we are trying to plan a wedding here...
my advice....go to grad school part time....if i could do over these two years...i would have done it part time..yes of course i got it done quickly and what not...but i havent felt an iota of relaxation in 2 years...im constantly stressed....
I give sooooooooooo much credit to anyone getting a masters degree! in any capacity for that matter! working full time, part time, planning a wedding or not....anyone...GO YOU! haha
ok sorry this was so long!!! good luck and let us know what you decide!! xo
ETA: i took out fullllll student loans! i had to..its a bit pricey (a little over $20k/yr)...and put money aside for books...(anywhere from 800-1200 per semester)

Re: For girls getting their masters...
it will take me almost 4 years when it should have taken only 3. I have my BA in a different field and so the the program I am in is longer. The usual education program is usually completed within 2 years. I have worked full time and went to school part time since I started only bc I chose to move out on my own and I need money for rent. I will tell you that it's alot and my weekends depending on the classes I had, were mostly devoted to school work. Also, my job is flexible with letting me leave early for classes sicne I work an hour away from where my school is. I'm getting married in May of 2010 and actually decided to take that semester off of school as it would have been way too much for me. This now means I won't be graduating until the following Jan. If I had to do over again I would have just switched my major during my undergrad and went the extra year. I don't have a career right now so am lookin forward to that when I graduate. I do have student loans but I'm not really that worried about paying them back. I plan on having kids pretty soon after we get married so when I'll actually get use of this degree I don't know lol.

i guess it all depends on what masters degree ur pursuing. i did in finance, so altho that was a lot of work, i guess there are others that are even more work. but that was very hard, and i completely sympathize with missing out on a lot, thats how it was for me i couldnt afford to go anywhere, cause i was paying the remainder of the tuition myself, couldnt plan anything ahead. that was horrible, but i kept telling myself that i'm doing this for a better future: maybe its very hard right now for a little bit, but soon it will all work out. and it totally did!

Re: For girls getting their masters...
what degree are you pursuing? i got my MSW in about 2.5 years while working full time. that included summers and winter sessions. honestly it ****** but i hate school. i took out loans but i went to a public school so its not SO bad. i dont think you qualify for financial aid as a grad student (or at least i didnt).
better to do it now than later (esp if you want kids)

I'm looking at getting an M.S.Ed. in Rehabilitation Couseling in Mental Health...certifies you to take the NYS licenscing exam which I'm assuming will help me get a job easier.

umm yeaaaah. Alot of places won't even bother looking at ur resume unless ur licensed. Check out cuny schools. I know John Jay offers a Mental Health Counseling degree but it's geared towards forensic psych. Not sure about the other Cuny schools but it's a lot less $$ then private. And unless ur going ivy league... unfortunately it's all a piece of paper in the end.
