Does your marriage license say anything about this being a second (or third, etc.) marriage?

Trying to figure out if the priest would be able to tell from the marriage certificate that my fiance was divorced. (He wasn't married in a church, so we didn't tell the priest he was married before! )

TIA!

Sarah,
It clearly states that you MUST declare previous marriages.

Previous Marriages
Information regarding previous marriages must be furnished in the application for a marriage license. This includes whether the former spouse or spouses are living, and whether the applicants are divorced and, if so, when, where and against whom the divorce or divorces were granted. A certified copy of the Decree of Divorce or a Certificate of Dissolution of Marriage may be required by the clerk issuing the marriage license.

yes sarah, it will say he was married. ours states that it's our first marriage...there's a whole space for this information on a 'fill in the blank' form.

ok sarah...i just went to my car and looked at our license....

underneath all the info on you/FH...name, DOB, age, employment, parents....etc.....

it says:
NUMBER OF THIS MARRIAGE:

next to both of ours says FIRST.

if he's divorced, it WILL say SECOND.

each of you has this 'line' on the license.

It also goes on to explain how/why the previous marriage(s) ended. this will all be there and your priest will be able to see it when he sees your license. and the priest/officiant/reverend is the one who mails back your license...they [at the town hall] actually say to you 'your officiant's responsibility is to mail this back within 5 days'

no, I understand that. I just wanted to know what ON the license it will then say to show that he is divorced and what my priest will see. All I'm worried about here is the priest.

I think I have to confess to my priest.

I'll just call and say I thought he meant 'in the Catholic church', in which case the answer was 'no' to was he previously married. 'What do we have to give you for the fact that he was married once by a Justice of the Peace?'. Play all dumb and innocent like (which isn't too far from the truth!)

Sarah,
Here's what I am gathering from your posts: You are looking for someone to tell you that the marraige license will not spill the beans about your FH being divorced. It seems that you really do not want your priest to know... are you worried that it will cause problems with your wedding happening in that church?

In my opinion (and it is just that, an opinion) it is probably better to get it out in the open now and find out if there is any action you have to take, rather than wait until your wedding is much closer and worry that there will be problems that arise due to the divorce.

As I mentioned in the other post, in the Episcopal church, my FH did not have to get an annulment... we just had to have the priest look at the divorce papers, discuss with FH the reasons behind it and have the bishop approve the wedding.

IMO, I would get it out in the open ASAP! Good luck!

You have to tell them because you need to get approval from the Archbishop.... and it takes several weeks... I had to get that because I was also married but in a church... it's important you tell him that.

I know that one of the reasons we are not getting married in a catholic church is because we would have to pay a some what high fee because my FH is divorced. It will say it on the license that it is a second marriage.

Yup... ya hit the nail on the head. This is the last time I listen to my mother. I should have just told the priest the truth from the get-go. Now I have to CONFESS to the priest about LYING to him. Yeah... that won't be too uncomfortable. This better not put a wrench in ANY of our plans. We still have just over 4 months, so hopefully that's enough time to take care of anything extra we'll now have to do. I'm glad I asked my girls! Thank you very much for your honesty and help!

I would go back to the place you got your licence. You need to clear it with them.

hey girls,
i was in this exact situation..only reversed..
i was married by a justice of the peace when i was 20..(9 years ago)..was married for 3 years, met my fiance a year later and have been with him ever since..he is catholic and so am i..we are getting married in a church..YOU MUST get an annulment in the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH..and it was quiet a long process...i had to give my divorce papers to the priest, have an interview with him telling him why i got married in the first place, why i think my annulment should be granted and what is different this time around...
they want to make sure you know what youre getting yourself into...
I would start with all of this ASAP..it took me at least 2-3 months before i got the annulment from the archbishop...

Sarah, after talking with our priest i seriously would not try to do this. Sometimes you can get away with it until the rehearsal dinner but they have their ways. It isn't worth it. Better to have everything else planned correctly.

I think that bc he wasn't married in a church he dosen't need an anulment. If I were going to get married in my FH's church- he is Protestant, I would not need an annulment. The Catholic church is a pain in the @-- about those things. I would just be honest with the priest. If he says no then think about having your wedding at the place you are having the reception. Some places are gorgeous. Hope it works out for you.
