For moms who are going back to work/went back to work

How did you find good, affordable childcare? Would you mind posting the approximate monthly cost?

My friend's children go to a temple daycare center in Sayville. It's a really great place, with a low teacher-child ratio, but they don't accept children younger than 2. Is that common?

Thanks Moms!

I was all ready to get a full time nanny, but then someone I completely trust volunteered to watch the baby, for whatever we can afford to pay her.

Patrick's hours vary from day to day, and week to week, so we won't be needing her for a set amount of time each day or week ~ the times will change every day. Because of that, instead of a weekly salary we are going to pay her by the hour. We haven't settled on a wage yet, but it will most likely be between $10-$15.

ETA: I don't really know much about daycare centers as a whole. One we inquired into would only take infants full time, and that was not going to work for us. We needed a more flexible schedule.

Oh Jen, that's wonderful!!!!! I'm so happy for you that you found someone you know!!!

I was checking out the prices of daycare for 2 days a week, since my mother will watch the baby for 3 days. I got a price of $137.50 for the 2 days, but if Joe picks up the baby before 4, it would be $125. The more days a week the baby is in DC, the cheaper it is.

I know my sister had my nephew in DC in Jersey and she paid about $12,000 a year!!!! And that was before she could deduct it from her taxes! Now she's a SAHM because it was getting to be too much money and she was getting phone calls every other day about nonsense, so she decided to quit and stay home.

Thanks you guys. I know daycare in Manhattan is very expensive, and I get a discount through my job, but it still is about 2k per month, making it not really worth my time working.

On site daycare (job sponsored) doesn't always mean cheaper. Some work on your household income and some just have a set price.

You can ask other working moms that you know about their daycare situation. You can also look into the major chains such as Tutor Time.

Scott has daycare at work and for 3 days a week it is somewhere around $160 per week. Full time is $250 per week. But now we have to figure out what to do when he travels which is about 1X every 6-8 weeks because there are no train stations that I can part at near his job (you need a town permit for that) so there is no way I could get to and from work at those times. Huh! So we are also trying to figure this all out.

When I was workiing, Anthony went to daycare in Wantagh for $235 weekly. It was a great place but like all daycare I would avoid it for children under 1 1/2. They all seemed to keep them in the baby room in cribs with a lot less interaction. My SIL just toured a few day cares and has elected to take a year off without pay until her daughter is older. Daycare for 2 year olds is great! They learn so much and make friends very easily. I miss sending Anthony there.

HI THERE- this was an agonizing process for me cuz my mom was SAHM and I wanted to do the same...well fast foward 30 years and factor in TaXES and we cannot afford for me to saty at home..I am the primary bread winner...argh

Julianne is enrolled full time at a JCC in Oceanside. WE recieved rave reviews from friends that had their children enrolled there. I cked out other palces too but none of them had as many things to offer as the JCC. By age 3 all kids learn how to swim at the center..in their HUGE pool ...instructed by red cross. Important in our area- LONG BEACH.
ALos, computer rooms for the kids, library, rainy day playrooms feared by age, auditorium and gyms for the grouwn ups. Also has a lot to offer seniors...

I dont remember the monthly fee for the infant room..I want to say around $890...but you must also pay a membership fee and a building fund fee...for a hefty price...but those 2 fees are deductable since this is considered a charitable donation.

Many places do NOT take kids under 2. Law stipulates 1 caregiver for 3 kids at this age..and some places cannot afford to have that set up.

no place in my area would take infants part time...since they are assigned cribs to sleep in, they do not share cribs between two infants.

Phyl..I live in East Rockaway. Thank you for that info..when the time comes I don't think I will be able to be a SAHM either..
I know it is harder for infant daycare. This is good to know.

My son is in Daycare 3 days a week at Kiddie Academy, and I pay $620/month (he's 5, so it's more expensive for younger children)

Thank you all so much. Maybe by the time I have a child we will be living on LI where the prices seem more reasonable. We're also going to try really hard to somehow allow me to stay home for at least the first year.

It's scary that one has to think of this 2 years in advance, but c'est la vie.

Thanks again!

I heard that JFKidsport in the five towns is great also. They take them as early as a month but not sure of their prices. I am lucky that my husband works nights. Even though I am going back to work in September he will be home with Tommy. I guess daddy will sleep when Tommy sleeps. I am also lucky that the school where I teach is only 10 minutes from my house so I get to make visits during lunch daily.
