For pet owners...

How is your pet going to be cared for while you are on your honeymoon?

I can't bear to think of my kitty caged at a boarding place for almost two weeks

We have friends down the block who said they would come by to feed, water, scoop litter and pet him for a little while each day. Is this enough companionship? He's an indoor cat, by the way.

I'm a bit of a neurotic 'mommy'-and would appreciate any advice!!

Re: For pet owners...

We have a dog, so we know how you feel. We are kenneling him. But he absolutely loves the place. Every time we go, he is excited and jumps all over the woman who cares for him, so we know he is in good hands.

Cats are different and I wouldn't recommend a kennel (I don't think it's necesary). I know cats can go along time without someone there. I think that what your friends have offered to do is enough for you cat. We frequently cat sit for a friend of ours, and we only go over once a day for a little while to feed and play with them. As long as there is food and water down, they will be fine.

I hope this makes you feel better.

Re: For pet owners...

We have someone coming to the house every other day to take care of our cats. I really hate to leave them for that long, almost 3 weeks

For cats, I think it's better to leave them in their own environment if possible. I'm sure they'll get over the separation before I do.

Good Luck.
Jennifer

Re: For pet owners...

We have a black lab and since we live in Texas now and are getting married in NY, we will have to put him at doggie camp for about two weeks. We are not taking a honeymoon right away, so it shouldn't be too bad for him. We send him to the same place all the time and he seems to come back ok!

Re: For pet owners...

As a die-hard kitty cat lover. It is best to keep your cat in it's own environment....I removed my cat from the home and sent him to a friend's house and my cat was flipping out and as he was just getting settled in.. I came home and removed him and took him home! It was pure trauma for him. Having someone come and feed him and scoop the litter is good enough, they will entertain themselves! Good Luck!

Re: For pet owners...

My sister is keeping my pride and joy Beemer. She is our kitty and I love her, so I totally understand your feelings. My sister will stay at my place and also bring Beemer with her to her place somedays. Beemer knows 'Aunt Tammy' very well so she will be fine but I will miss her like crazy!

Re: For pet owners...

We have a black lab as well, and I have no idea how to cope w. the seperation anxiety of leaving him for over 2 weeks. I am hoping to find a reputable dog sitter (not a kennel) that will watch him, since I cannot stand the thought of my puppy being in a cage for that long, esp since hes such a big dog. If anyone knows of a dog sitter who watched animals in their house, please let me know! I will travel and pay well for a good sitter. Thanks

Re: For pet owners...

For dog owners: Make sure he has his kennel cough shot and that is is not due during your trip away. My parents dog got kennel cough even though his shot was not due for 3 weeks after they returned. Just a reminder.

Re: For pet owners...

Agree with Michele on this one. Make sure your doggy gets the shot.

My little guy is staying with my parents. He can't be without my parents dog and vice versa!!

Re: For pet owners...

Zac1228: My cat cannot go for more than a work day without someone at home. I know it sounds crazy, but she is totally co-dependant. I left her overnight once and she was sooo upset when we got home and for the next few days that I would never do it again. She honestly is a people-cat.

If you know your animal you can figure out what is best for him/her. Speak with parents, close friends and paid sitters to help. Kennels are great for dogs, but cats will not do as well- normally.

I left our cat at our house (to keep her in her environment)...and my friend came over every day (to get away from her roommates as well :) )and fed and watered the cat...

the dog takes more energy...I took him to my parents and sisters...they shared him...since they were off for the summer...

Re: For pet owners...

We have 2 extremely independent indoor/outdoor cats. We have friends in the neighborhood who will come over to feed them. They have taken care of our cats before, and they are cat lovers themselves, so I trust them completely. The only thing we feel bad about is that they won't be able to go out, but that's the least of our concern. I'm all for keeping the cats in their comfortable environment, if at all possible...

We will be keeping our dog at my mom's house, he likes it there because they have a dog also and he has someone to play with. We will miss him when we're away but he'll be in good hands.

Re: For pet owners...

Dawn, what is doggie camp? Do the dogs get caged every day, or do they get to run around? I think I will call him, sounds like just what I am looking for I would love to leave Onyx w. relatives, but hes a big dog (black lab, 90 lbs) and needs a lot of excersize. My parents have moved into a condo, so they cannot take him, and all my friends live in apts with no yards. Suffice it to say none of them are lining up to take the dog out twice a day and have him in their tiny NYC apts for 2 weeks.

Re: For pet owners...

The dogs are caged so they dont fight. But he takes each one out at and lets them run in the yard (huge yard) He sits with them and plays with them. He is a very sweet man. When we got our dog from him, he cried when she left. Give him a call, I am sure he will explaine everything then you can deside. We were going to leave Buca there but her grandparents want to watch her. Good luck

I am soooo glad that I am not the only one who says 'grandparents' or 'mommy' to her animal.
