For plus sized brides

Original post by alison1daland

Did anyone else feel like a beached whale when trying on dresses? I am usually a 16/18, and tried on mostly 18s, and I felt like i was gigantor. (Usually I don't feel too big...) I see so many plus size brides on here trying on gowns that look and fit great, and I feel like I didn't see any at all... What were your tricks, or os it really all in how its altered?

TIA

I'm a plus size, usually wear an 18. I have an advantage in height, so it balances me out.
I was trying not to stress with trying on dresses, but found that styles with draping across the middle were more flattering. I wound up buying a strapless Maggie Sottero dress (Michelle)because I loved the corset back. Made me look shapely - gotta love those curves ! I also ordered removable sheer sleeves, like on the Rosemary Leigh, in case I am having doubts about my arms.
My FH met me as a big girl, fell in love with me that way, and that's who I am !

I love my corset-back dress! And I agree with your last sentiment - my FH and family know what I look like and love me regardless!

Hello All,
I'm going to start looking for a wedding dress this weekend. I'm a plus-size. I really don't want to hold up the dress in front of me and try to 'picture' what it will look like on me. I know that the whole process will be stressful.

I purchased my dress at Lynbrook Bridal - they have a nice selection of plus-size dresses to try on.

I tried on sample sizes 16 and 20 and got into them both. My dress was ordered in a 22 to accomodate my bust.
Call around to find out where they have large size samples, especially if there is a particular dress you would like to try on. I went to Lilette's in Baldwin and Bridal Reflections in Massapequa to try on Maggie Sottero dresses.

i also used my sis to try on a dress if I couldn't get into it. She has a similar but smaller shape. Also used her for a side-by-side comparison when i couldn't make up my mind.

that was only one place i went. the rest of the places were really great, they had dresses at least close to my size, (size 16 dresses I'm size 18) where i was able to try them on, I'm big on top, so i couldnt zipper them, but I was ok with that. dont let it be a stressful thing, I put off shopping for a while beause of that but in the end it was really fun!! something you can do is when you call for appointments ask if they carry plus size samples!
ps you have FM

I feel your pain ladies... I went 'Seriously' dress shopping this weekend and had to squeeze into 16's. I hate that everyone always asks about 'the dress.' 'Did you find a dress yet?' Ugh.... Good luck to all! And if anyone can recommend any stores with a good selection of plus size dresses to try on in the Bayside (North East Queens) area, I'd be eternally grateful!

I'm sooooo glad you posted. Now I feel better knowing I'm not the only one. I have posted a few (too many) times about my dress frustrations.

I am a size 18/20 and I've been to a few stores and felt fine because they had dresses that were my size or larger to try on. DB fit me perfectly (even though I hate the place).

Today I went to Macy's and I tried on size 24's that barely fit. I'm pretty big on top and everthing seemed to swim on me and then not fit right in the middle. I told my mother it didn't boost my self esteem. I was so frustrated I almost didn't want to look at anything else.

I'm just glad I still have time to find THE dress.

Try a corset back dress. I'm also big on top and they are pretty forgiving around the middle.
