For plus sized brides

For plus sized brides

Did anyone else feel like a beached whale when trying on dresses? I am usually a 16/18, and tried on mostly 18s, and I felt like i was gigantor. (Usually I don't feel too big...) I see so many plus size brides on here trying on gowns that look and fit great, and I feel like I didn't see any at all... What were your tricks, or os it really all in how its altered?

TIA

Re: For plus sized brides

I'm bigger than you (20/22) and I felt kinda big when I tried on ones that didn't fit. however, when I tried on my dress, it fit perfectly and I just felt beautiful. I guess that's what says that it's 'the one.'

Just keep looking, you'll be beautiful in your dress!

I'm a plus size too. When I went looking for my dress, I looked at what would fit my shape and size the best. I tried on 6 different dresses, the dress that I picked was dress number 6. The minute I put that dress on I knew that was my dress I fell completely in love with it. For the first time in my life I felt Beautiful and that's how you will feel went you find the dress that's meant for you. Don't worry you will find your dress very soon.....

I'm an 18 too & felt the same way until I tried on my dress...I couldn't believe how great it looked & the fact that I was able to order it in a 16w! I found that gowns with corset backs worked the best for me (they were more forgiving) and that dresses that gather to the side actually gave me a REALLY nice shape...Here are some pics of my gown...it's been discontinued since then, but there are tons out there like it. Hopefully you'll find the style flattering too & it will help you out in your search!

I'm a size 24 and I did feel big when I was trying on the size 22's that didn't quite zip. I found one gown that I tried on in a 22 (Maggie Sottero's Rosemary Leigh- it's in my album) that it didn't quite fit but I fell in love with it for the look of it. It was actually the very first dress I tried on at all.

yes most wedding dresses run smaller than your street size... I was surprised that the 24 fit me since that's my street clothes size.

As much as I want to be healthy, I'm pretty comfortable with the way I look and I knew before going shopping that gown sizes run small. When I purchased my dress (I knew it was 'the one' immediately) I had to get an even bigger size to fit my hips. I know that sometimes sizes/numbers freak people out but you have to remember that after a dress is altered, the size doesn't even matter since it's altered to fit you perfectly. I know it can be hard but try to ignore the numbers - when you find your dress you will know and you'll be beautiful!

I felt the same when trying on regular sizes.
I have an hourglass figure so I need a dress to fit my hips.
I went to David's Bridal to try on a few and a 20W fits perfectky and makes me feel beautiful and curvy!!!
When you try the right dress you will know it - the same way you know that FH is 'the one' you will find the dress that is 'your one'

I am a 14-16 and I bought a size 20 bridesmaid dress a few weeks ago at davids bridal. i would imagine it will be the same when i go wedding dress shopping too!

have to remember that they run small and the number is a bummer but over all i am comfortable - most of the time..

Re: For plus sized brides

I am about an 18 or so and I did feel rediculous when I was trying on dresses at first but the girl that was helping me was super sweet and I didn't feel weird being in front of her at all. There were two maggie sottero dresses that were a size 10 and I couldn't get in them even though they were corsets but she walked out behind meholding the waist and I was holding the top and we scooted out of the dressing room (I was practicly nekid! LOL) but she was really cool.

I didn't want a corset but when I tried on my dress, Maggie Sottero, Pia, it was beautiful and made me look 40 lbs thinner (no joke)

I think Maggie is great for plus size, the corsets give you great shape and you don't have to be bothered with any aggrevating support garments underneath, not even a bra. Just cute panties! Much more comfortable that the body shapers with the boning and everything that I would have had to wear if I would have choosen a traditional zip up. Also, Maggie Sottero comes in petite sizes as well, so generally there is not much altering needed since you can cinch it up in the back (if you loose or gain a little) and the length is pretty good too for petite (i'm 5'3)

just my opinion, HTH

Re: For plus sized brides

I feel your pain girls. I myself am a 16/18 and hated trying on dresses because they were never in my size. They give you a size 8-12 and tell you try it on and imagine what the dress would look like in your size. There you are with your backside hanging out with the dress clipped to your bra. Way to make you feel horrible. Luckily, I found the designer Jasmine, who has beautiful dresses which has a corset piece inside so that although your trying on the size 12 dress the corset piece can be zippered and it is form fitting to your body. Plus it helps the sales person to better know what size you need. The dresses are really slimming. which is a plus and I actually go to try on a dress that fit. I recommend them to any plus size girls.

I know how you feel. I hate cloths shopping... but I actually found my wedding dress easier than I can find a pair of jeans. The dress didn't exactly fit me but I really got the idea, and I felt beautiful in it!!! My dress has a V shaped waist private label by G has a bunch of these, it is very sliming.
I did have a bad experience at one place where they actually had me hold the dress up infront of me (in my bra and underwear) in the middle of the store, my back being exposed to people coming and going... it was sooooo embarrassing!!! FM me if you want to know where that was so you can avoid them, but I have heard a lot of good things about them from other brides

Re: For plus sized brides

I fetl like a beach whale in the first dress I tried on and started crying... then my sister (moh) reassured me that I didn't look like a whale (she would have told me if I did)... after that it was much better. Until we got to the store that had only size 6, 8 and 10 samples! Then I felt huge and THANK GOD that wasn't the first place we went to because I would have said screw it to the whole dress thing

But yea, some dresses made me feel bigger than others. I found out quite quickly that what I liked the best and what was most flattering was the asymetric style dresses.

I am a plus size bride. I wear a 16/18 in cloths and my dress was a 20. I bought mine at Davids Bridal and found a dress that was flattering to my middle section. I also had my alterations done at Davids. When I went there I tried on over 20 dresses in my size. When I tried on the only thing I brought with me was spanx. Once I picked my dress I bought my suck-it in long line bra.

Re: For plus sized brides

I felt like a beached whale before trying them on, during trying them on and AFTER trying them on. Even with all the make up, the hair and the jewelery - I felt like a whale on my wedding day too. I kept telling people I looked like a dirty marshmallow.

But it didn't matter one iota in the end. I was NOT a beautiful bride (and not because of the extra weight - I am just not a pretty girl)... but I married the love of my life and I was surrounded by people who loved me and it didn't matter at all that I didn't look anything like any of the brides in the magazines.

The dress is just a confection - and you will find one that makes you feel lovely and no matter what... you will be marrying someone you love and who loves you back!

Re: For plus sized brides

I'm a plus size, usually wear an 18. I have an advantage in height, so it balances me out.
I was trying not to stress with trying on dresses, but found that styles with draping across the middle were more flattering. I wound up buying a strapless Maggie Sottero dress (Michelle)because I loved the corset back. Made me look shapely - gotta love those curves ! I also ordered removable sheer sleeves, like on the Rosemary Leigh, in case I am having doubts about my arms.
My FH met me as a big girl, fell in love with me that way, and that's who I am !
