For the Moms who had GD- need some information asap

For the Moms who had GD- need some information asap

Did the doctors take your baby immediately to the NIC Unit because of the GD?

Where you on insilin or just on diet control? What hospital did you deliver at?

Bascially a L&D nurse told the last week told me that at NUMC takes all GD babies directly to the NIC Unit after delivery. I have read and read and no where do I see that this is necessary. Of course is something is wrong with the baby during ANY delivery to ANY mom that is totally different. But to make a pre-determination like that seems totally NOT okay to me, especially since my NSTs, blood pressure, bio physical profile, and ALL 8 sonos have been 100% fine and in perfect order.

I need some info to use when I speak with the hospital this week.

Thanks- Michele

They didn't take Damien to the NICU, Steve went with him to the nursey the only thing was if the baby has low blood sugar. They tested Damien and I couldn't BF until he was given a clean bill of health. My OBGYN never ever said anything about him having to go into the NICU. Good Luck Michele We had him at NSUH@Plainview

Thanks Stacey. But were you allowed to hold the baby and bond for a bit before they took him?
A few girls on a baby center site told me that they BF right away and if needed , after BFing would give 2oz of formula to help with any sugar issues. That is what I want to do.

I am just sick of the doctors treating me like I have the Plague!

Michele -

I didn't have GD, but I did have a fever of 101 when I was in labor so they told me that Sean would have to go to NICU for 48 hour observation. The pediatrician was called in about 20 minutes before Sean was born to take him to NICU. I *made* Steve go w/ them.

I was able to hold him for about a minute (I made sure of that) and not able to breastfeed (which is another story altogether!!!)

Put your foot down!!! I don't see any reason you can't hold him/her for a few minutes, unless, of course, there's an emergency.

You have no idea how down this foot is! But remember they are pre-determining this. I don't have a fever, I don't have any indication that there is ANY problem. So my foot is planted 100% firm!

Just reading your post to my DH ( he's a physician) and he said that doesnt make any sence to him that they would do that UNLESS something were wrong or they suspect something might be wrong now, which your saying is not the case.
He said you shouldnt accept ' this is just how its done here'

Michele I didn't get to hold him because of the c-section, but Steve held him for a few minutes before they took him to the nursery. As I said be fore the whole BF'd thing got me really upset because they wouldn't let me BF until they checked to make sure his levels were OK. Beforehand I hand made it extremely clear that he was to be given no bottles or pacifers. When my sister and MIL were looking at him through the nursey glass and saw the nurse giving him a bottle they started banging on the glass and yelling at the nurse. No one had come to my room to explain anything to me. He was born at 3:24pm and I didn't get to nurse him until 9:30pm, luckily he latched right on and I had no problems, the nurses actually couldn't believe he was my first baby I did so well. I would say put your foot down about the whole NICU thing, it sounds like a bunch of bunk!!! Good Luck

I am honestly besides myself over this stuff. I feel like I am fighting with doctors that I don't even know and that don't even know me. They all 'talk' thru the midwife. And I know that she can only fight so much for me.

If the answers are not what I want, I am seriously considering telling the midwife I am going to go to a new hospital. I am tired and scared enough and feel like all I do is fight for my patient rights.

Michele...

sorry not a mom...but I am thinking of you very often lately!!

what are your options for other hospitals? would it be covered by your insurance? would your midwife be able to assist at another one?

I'm not liking the sound of what they are saying...it sounds to me it is a way to get more money from the insurance company OR CYA for them and malpractice...

I would look into other hospitals...

Sorry you are going through this Michele.

Just to share, my friend had her baby a few weeks ago at At. Catherine's and was very unhappy with everything there. THey also had that staff infection scare with the babies a few months back. Just wanted to let you know in case you do change hospitals.

Hang in there.
