Well I changed my wedding date from Friday Sept 26th to Saturday Dec 20th.
Now I understand that my church has mass on Saturdays at 5:00pm. However I can only have a 3:00pm Mass/Ceremony.
But I changed the hall and my BM gave us a 7:30pm cocktail hour so. I was thinking it was alot of time from a 3:30pm Mass/Ceremony to a 7:30pm cocktail (3 hours) but now the Deacon just called me and said I can only have a 3:00pm not 3:30pm on a Saturday. That is a 3 and 1/2 hour gap in between the church and cocktail hour!!!!
Isn't that a BIG gap and aren't my guests going to be annoyed? I mean I kind of am worried myself I don't need 3 1/2 hours to get from Bayblon to Mineola and take pics before the cocktail hour.
Do you think I should call the hall and see if they can do a 6:30 cocktail or even 7pm??
TIA

Re: For those getting married at a church
I don't think it is a problem. By the time you finish the mass and do the receiving line and take pics and then get to your RH it is not THAT much time so don't worry, there are people who have a bigger gap thean that

i agree that it seems to be a large gap. i have a 2 hour gap. it cant hurt to try and push up the RH right? see what they say.

Re: For those getting married at a church
I see no harm in trying, but if they can't..... no big deal. People will just have to deal with it. Plus it's Dec. so you could take possible bad weather into account for the time gap. Personally, I like when I have time inbetween church and RH bc I don't like to be all dressed up for that long. I go to church nicely dressed and then change into my party dress during the gap.

Re: For those getting married at a church
I thought the same thing b/c my church is at 3:30pm and the cocktail hour starts at 7:30pm..but EVERYONE keeps telling me that i'll find that it goes by so fast and that they felt even 4 hrs wasnt enough time to take all the pics they wanted to or whatever. So i stopped worrying and the people can do whatever the hell they want in between. I was worried at first but alot of my family and FHs family lives in the area so they can go somewhere i'm sure

Re: For those getting married at a church
I had a simialar problem. Mine falls on a day when they have communion confessions and then they have Mass after that. SO, my 3:30 had to be moved to 1:30. I moved my cocktail to 6pm. I was bumbed at first, but I figure you have plenty of time now to take all the pics you want without rushing and can completely enjoy your cocktail hour. People will find something to do with themselves, they are used to it.

We had the same situation... Our church is at 3PM (on a sat.) and we origionally had the CH starting at 7PM. I called my contact at the RH and they changed it to 6PM for CH for us, no problem!! I would call the RH to find out and if so have them change the contract. So now we are 6-11 , not 7-12 for Reception.

Re: For those getting married at a church
thanks girls you are making me feel so much better. I was thinking maybe add on a 1/2 hour to the cocktail hour or just move it down a 1/2 hour to 7pm.
But you are right weather has to be taken into account as well as receiving line, and I know we need to take pictures and all....ughh i just feel it is such a big gap. but thankfully alot of my family either live by the church or right near the RH so they can go home in between if they want!

Re: For those getting married at a church
Well i have a 2:30 ceremony and a 7:30 cocktail hour, so im in the same boat as you :) We are thinking about doing an in between spot for pictures. If you have a lot of Out of town guests, maybe a close family member can open their house and have a place for everyone to hang out? MY parents did that for my sister's wedding. No one really went back to the house, but it was there as an option

haha i feel bad i was just there last week to sign a new contract and saw it said 7:30 but didnt think it was bad to have a 3:30-4:30 reception and my church is 40 minutes away from JT. But maybe I can just call and see if tey dont mind pushing it up a 1/2 hour and changing it to 7pm

Re: For those getting married at a church
as a fellow JT AND winter bride can i give you some advice?
dont change it
my church is at 3PM and my CH starts at 7:30 and it takes about 20 minutes to get to the hall from the church
as winter brides we do have to think about snow - think about it this way . . . even if it takes HOURS to get to the hall - you will still have time for pictures
the time will go by SO FAST for us - i bet we will STILL feel rushed and for the guests, even if it is only a two hour gap they still need to find something to do in the middle so what is the difference itf it is longer
in my long TWO YEAR engagement, lol i have taken comfort in the fact that there is a huge gap so that way even if something happens in the middle, it will still leave time to get there and think of it this way
3PM mass 4PM pictures at church 4:30PM leave church 5:30PM arrive at hall ( including traffic, just getting everyone INTO the limos etc ) that only leave two hours for pictures and you have to eat something and freshen up etc in this time. . .
just my two cents

you just made me feel sooo much better. Well so did the rest of you ladies. But since you are a fellow JT bride and closer than me to the hall and have the same amount of time I feel more comforted. I understand what you mean now. If they have a 2 hour gap they can stand a 3 hour gap. Plus they can go to JT right like an hour to 1/2 hour before??
THANKS AGAIN!! I will show this post to FH when he starts complaining cause I know he will be. Oh and you aren't having a mass right- I am pretty sure we are not as well but do they run just the same amount of time?

Re: For those getting married at a church
I don't think this is a big gap at all. Our church is 2:30 and CH is at 7:30. We figure after mass, and receiving line and pictures it will easily be 4:30 by the time we are ready to leave there and head onto another place for pics. I personally know my guests will find something to do (I have done it for many of them) and I don't want to be rushed with pictures. And I would prefer to have them all done prior to the CH so I can do my rounds then.

If they could, I think 7 would be perfect for you... And 40 mins with traffic could be over 1 hour! And, if there is any sort of weather. If they can't ... it's still fine esp. since you have family close...

Re: For those getting married at a church
it's so funny - this happens ALL the time for Saturday weddings.
I don't think it's a big deal. I hate when guests get annoyed, it's like 1 day people, 1 frigging day out of your lives is not going to kill you. It's frigging selfish.
Anyway, I say don't sweat it - if you're concerned set up a hospitality suite at a hotel close to your church or RH, let people chill there until the cocktail hour.

Also - your guests can check out that awesome hospitality lounge! its GORGEOUS in there and they can have some light foods and drinks while they wait! i am going to make sure they have egg nog and hot chocolate for my guests!

yeah i mean i am not asking for anything special really - i have been really laid back so hopefully they will try to help me out with that!
i mean, they even told me that at hte CH i could have a specialty dish that my mom makes LOL i am not doing it but they mentioned that and it was funny - i could just imagine my mom in the kitchen the day of the wedding yelling at the chefs!
