For those getting married in a church

What music are you using for your processional? and what are your girls walking into?

What music are you using for your recessional?

I think I want Pachabel Canon in D for me - not really a big fan of 'Here comes the bride'. Not sure yet about anything else.

Canon in D for me...

I have no choice. The church doesn't allow the Wedding March to be played at all..

Re: For those getting married in a church

My church provided me with an approved list of songs (which the organist then marked which ones he recommended) and we borrowed a tape with a clip of each piece on it to help us decide

This is my list and what he wrote:

1) Purcell - Trumpet Voluntary - attendant processional
2) Stanley - Trumpet Tune - good recessional
3) Purcell- Trumpet Tune - bride processional
4) Handel - Allegro Maestoso (water music) excellent bride processional
5) Campra - Rigadon
6) Wagner - Wedding march (which he can't stand)
7) Mendelssohn - Wedding Recessional
8) Mouret - Rondeau (attendant processional)
9) Brahms - Haydn Theme
10) Beethovan - Ode to Joy (recessional)
11) Handel - The Rejoicing (excellent recessional)
12) Marcello - Psalm 19
13) Mendelssohn - Sonata III
14) Vierne - Final (1st Symphony)
15) Widor - Toccata (5th Symphony)
16) Bach Jesu, Joy of Man's desiring (good for prelude or communion)
17) Walton - Crown Imperial March

Re: For those getting married in a church

Supposedly the song is from a play that is either about something thats 'un-christian' or was written by someone that was 'un-christian' and they don't think it's appropriate for a ceremony celebrating God and marriage. I have no idea... That's what the Pastor said and my cousin had the same problem...

it's ok... I can deal with it. I'll just have to play it at the reception... LOL

Wagner was anti-semetic so some churches don't allow the song tobe played -

Re: For those getting married in a church

Interesting info about Wagner and Mendelsohn

The so-called traditional 'wedding marches' by Wagner and Mendelssohn have nothing to do with the Sacred Liturgy and may not be used. In fact, the origin of these compositions borders on the profane and the ridicules. The 'Bridal Chorus' (Here Comes the Bride') from Wagner's opera, Lohengrin, accompanies an illicit ceremony, a tragic bedroom fiasco. Mendelssohn's incidental music to Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream accompanies a farcical wedding. Even though they are frequently used in the United States in Protestant churches, they are rarely used in Catholic churches. For the above-mentioned reasons, to use them in connection with a church ceremony is simply inappropriate. SOURCE

Wagner's last opera, Lohengrin. Ironically, this work inspired both Adolf Hitler,s perverse theories and the formation of the modern state of Israel. Through this example, we see more than the ability of art to inspire human action. Source
