Re: For those going to or have been to Italy...
We went to Florence and Rome on our honeymoon!
I HIGHLY recommend Hotel Davanzati in Florence. They were FABULOUS. Check them out on Trip Advisor.
Our hotel in Rome was AWFUL. Pretty grounds, large room, and great restaurant, but rude front desk staff and way too far away from EVERYTHING. I forget the name... when I remember, I'll post it here.
ETA - If you want to go on a fantastic wine tour while in Florence, we used Rebecca from Tuscan Wine Tours. She was amazing!!!

When I went to Rome in the fall of 06 we rented an apartment. I guess it depends how long you are staying, but it was sooo great! We had a balcony and a kitchen it was huge! and less expensive then staying in a hotel. The only negative was we didn't have the benefit of a consierge so we figured some stuff out on our own. But it was a really great experience. Our place was across the street from the Vatican wall...
We also used a company called tuscany in my pocket when we visited florence. We had a personal guide named Guido...he guided us around florence and then took us into Tuscany where we went to a few winerys and got personal tours and lunch made by the owners of the vinyard...I highly recommend him in florence he was so personal! If you are interested FM me and I can get you pictures. here is the website..
hotel bernini in florence, and hotel ciccerrone in rome.

We're staying at the Hotel Davanzati in a couple of months!!!! Glad to hear it was great.
In Rome we are staying at the Albergo del Senato, which is in the same square as the Pantheon. Also has good marks on Trip Advisor.
HTH!

When I was in Rome 3 years ago, I stayed at Hotel Canova. It is not a luxuary hotel the rooms are very small but it was not a ton of $$$$'s. Breakfast was included and it was in walking distance to alot of tourist sites. They also had a very good restaurant next door that was reasonable priced.
