For those needing passport........

There is something I want to share with you because it could cause a bunch of stress.

We went and applied for our passport. They needed to keep our original birth certificates and then mail them to us with the passport. You also need your birth certificate to obtain your marriage license. Make sure you get your passport early enough to get your birth certificate back in time!

I had no idea I needed my birth certificate.

So, the post office keeps your birth certificate and then mails it back??

Isn't that weird? I was speechless. Then my FH said, but don't we need that to get our license? The girl said 'yes' and took it. I'm glad we did it early enough and we just got them in the mail, so I'm calm. But I thought I'd warn anybody else.

I just went to apply the other day and I had NO idea that they take your birth certificate. It was kind of weird - imagine the post office lost it????

Notice on her post it says

'unless you are mailing away for your passport...'

This is what most ppl do...

She must have rcvd it ON THE SPOT. That is how I got mine... but you can only do this for certain circumstances...

Otherwise... I believe you need to send it. Check out this website!

What post offices give you your passport on the spot? i always thought that you had to send away for them at the post office.

Actually, you can just go to a passport issuing office and they don't keep anything. All they want to see is if the passport has the raised seal on it :)

They don't have that many, but the one I went to was in Norwalk, CT.

I got an additional copy of my birth certificate just in case - you can get another birth certificate online or via fax

This page has the instructions and then on the bottom of this page, you can click to do it via phone, fax or online.

WE JUST GOT OUR BIRTH CERTIFICATES AND PASSPORTS BACK IN 2 WEEKS. IT WS VERY FAST. GO TO A POST OFFICE THAT IS A BUSY ONE THAT WAY YOU GET IT BACK QUICKER

I think I'll take the ride up to Connecticut...my parents got passports there in the past, and I'm itching for a road trip. I don't want to give up my birth certificate....I've had the post office send me too many things that they have accidentally mangled and had to put in a special bag to mail it in one piece.
