what happens if you want to get married in the church later? is that even possible? let's say if you get married in vegas, can you still be married in the church?

I'm not an expert in this area, but from what i understand, the religious ceremony has absolutely nothing to do with actually being recognized as married by the federal government.

If you don't already have a civil ceremony, you will have to get a marriage license...this license then has to be signed at the end of your religious ceremony. If you don't get it signed, you may be recognized as married in the eyes of the church, but not by the govt.

So, if you're already married through a civil ceremony, you should still be able to have the religious ceremony (unless there are religious restrictions against that).

What you should really be worried about is whether a civil marriage in Vegas (or some other place) is recognized as 'legal.'

You should not have a problem at all. My fiance was recently relocated to the Netherlands and before we left we decided to get married at city hall. We plan on having a full church ceremony and reception in '09 with all our family and friends. The ceremony at city hall was really just a legal commitment. We consider the ceremony at the church our spiritual commitment. (Hope that makes sense). I consulted other brides before we did it and we were surprised to find out how many others had done the same thing. You should be just fine. However, if you are still concerned I would talk to your church and ask for there feedback. Best of luck to you.

really?! So wait if FH & I wanted to get married lets say in Jan by civil & then in June by church we can do this?

I had asked a priest this & he said that we had to do the civil 60 days before.

I really wanted to do the civil asap becuase i want to put FH on my health insurance.

yes. just check with your priest... You would have to get a 'SECOND CEREMONY' license...

My husband and I were legally married in May, and had our Full Mass wedding in September.
