? For those using judge as officiant

I spoke to our judge last week for the first time, wedding date is 3/30, and when asked about how much he charges, he said nothing.
I was a little shocked. He explained that he only does a few weddings a year and doesn't want the hassle of reporting the money to the IRS.
Is this weird? He also just wants to meet with us about half hour before the ceremony to explain what he'll do.
I kinda wanted to be able to meet w/ him before the actual day to go over things but he said it wasn't necessary.
Obviously I would tip the guy something, but this isn't what I expected. What has been the protocol with other brides who have, or will use a judge?

I am using a Town Clerk for my officiant, but she let us know the charge. She never said anything about money otherwise.

I would think the judge would WANT to meet with you ahead of time...I think that it is kind of weird to meet with you a half hour before the wedding, and not any time before that. Maybe it would be to your benefit to call and insist on meeting with him....it might ease your mind a bit.

Could anyone else recommend a judge in Suffolk? I might not go with this guy if I can find someone else.
I'm a lawyer and would like a judge to do it.
My friend used a judge, met with him beforehand, picked out certain vows, and then the guy did the opposite ones!
So I'm wondering if it's worth it - this guy is free after all, but part of me really wants to be able to meet with the judge beforehand.

I am using the 'house judge' he charges $230.00, you put a deposit down and then he sends you 8 different ceremonies (overall they are all very similar just slight variations in wording) he says you can mixed them together and make your own or use one as is. A few months before we send him our ceremony selection and the names of the BM and MOH. He does not come to the rehearsal and also only meets us a half hour before the ceremony. If you would like all his info just let me know.

BTW, he did say that if we were really fixed on meeting with him before our wedding day he could try and arrange a meeting.
