ETA: We didn't 'make' nearly what we spent on the wedding.

Re: For those who are married.....

we had 110 guest..made 9,000 DH's family is not from NY so they did not bring monetary gifts, they actually brought nothing, but that was okay..if they had not of attended it would have looked like my birthday party not our wedding. We kept our wedding costs low because I figured this was going to happen, the next morning we woke up very happy that we did not tap into our house fund for the celebration

Quite a few people surprised us with no card, no gift...It's very hard to predict. I would just say do what you can afford, and all else will be a pleasant surprise.

Unfortunately, you never 'make' as much as you might expect to when it comes to a wedding... which is why its better to have no expectations. You just never know who is going to be generous... or not so generous

We were relatively lucky, some people went above and beyond, which made up for the stiffers (I hardly cared if I got a gift or just a little money ... I wasn't looking to make $$ either.. but at the very least I did expect at least a .99 cent CARD ... and I'm still waiting 6 months later )

OK sorry to tangent, I'll FM you with the money figures

Kinda of a weird question! I didn't think of my wedding as a 'money making event.' Count on $0 and then you'll be pleasantly surprised by your guests generousity...there isn't a formula for this.

You can say that. I was thinking that way up until I opened my gifts. I was not thrilled with the couples who gave us 50.00.One couples son got married the year before and they knew how much a wedding costs. Maybe I sound like a spoiled stuck up brat (which im not) but thats just how I feel. We got I think 10,000-14,000 Mostly because my family gave us 500.00 each. Mikes grandparents gave us 3000.00 and Mikes sister (who has 4 kids and all 6 of them where in the wedding party) gave us a thousand We tried to give it back. You really can't expect TRUST ME. U will be really disapointed.

On the other hand the people who didn't give us anything not even a card still got thank yous. Which a lot of people don't do.

ETA: The people who gave us 50.00 where from Mikes side and people who we never EVER met. Maybe that is why thats all we got from them. But Mike parents felt the need to invite them even though the day we got engaged Mikes mom said I already paid for my daughters wedding Im done I don't have to pay for anyone else.

Received about 1/2 of what we spent. (Not a lot but we didn't expect a lot)

If you are paying for the wedding yourselves, I'd be surprised if you come out ahead ... just doesn't work that way as far as I can tell.

We had 117 guests, got gifts from everyone, some VERY generous and when it was all deposited, it was less than half of what we spent and that was fine. I did not expect my guests to pay for my wedding.

I think I am in the minority, but everyone was so, so generous. I was in awe! I couldn't believe some of the monetary gifts that people gave us. The money that we spent on the wedding (excluding the HM) was covered by our guests.

I agree. Expect nothing. It's a little dangerous to have any expectations. You will be pleasantly surprised by some guests and unpleasantly surprised by others.

Considering what was spent on the wedding (by my mom, me, and DH), we got back about 50% of what we all spent in total -- maybe even a little bit more than 50%.

Us too and part of the honeymoon. I really was surprised at what we have (and still are) received.

We got back basically what we spent on the reception. It did not cover what we spent on DJ, photo/video, honeymoon, my dress, etc.
