It's just basically red food coloring in chocolate cake. The receipt calls for vinegar (ew) but it makes it very yummy and soft.. (velvety).

Here's the recipe: (i'll go put it on the other cooking board too)

Ingredients
1/2 cup shortening
1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon butter flavor (optional)
1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 level tablespoons cocoa
2-1/2 cups sifted cake flour
(or 2 cups and three tablespoons all-purpose flour, sifted)
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon salt
1 (1-ounce) bottle red food coloring

Method
Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and flavors until very light and fluffy (3 to 5 minutes). Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to the mixture. Alternately add flour and buttermilk and continue mixing on medium for 3 minutes. Mix soda and vinegar in small bowl; add to batter. Blend well. Bake in three greased and floured 9 or 10 inch cake pans for 20-25 minutes at 350 F. Let cool completely. Remove from pans. Frost with cream cheese frosting (below). Serves: 12.

Re: For those who asked.. here's what Red Velvet Cake looks like

I had a red velvet cake--The whole cake was red velvet, since I was doing the whole red theme. IT was so yummy--we did a creeam cheese filling, and I swear the cake was gone--eveyone ate it--no leftovers. (and the cake was made for 350)!

I am from New Orleans, and since I was doing everything red, the cake tied my Southerness and the theme together. I have to put my 2 cents in and say that I don't consider Texas the South--hehe

Here's a pic of the cake:

funny you have this thread. I just made one for my FH today. I've surprised him when he came home from work. I am trying hard to stay away, but one piece is not going to kill me.

That's so funny that you posted the recipe today. I bought red velvet cupcakes for my bookclub yesterday and my FH was so jealous. Its him favorite. He's taking a huge exam tomorrow and I was thinking of making it for him. Yeah!!! Now I don't have have to look for a recipe.

Re: For those who asked.. here's what Red Velvet Cake looks like

I'm definitely NOT southern, but I'm having red velvet cake. I'm having a teired cake with one teir red velvet, then white cake with raspberry filling, third layer not sure (will probably end up being 2 teirs white with rasp and one red velvet). Eventhough my wedding colors are white, pastel blue, lavender, and royal purple, I think the red & white layers will look nice. And it's different. ~~Kim
