For those who asked.. here's what Red Velvet Cake looks like

It's just basically red food coloring in chocolate cake. The receipt calls for vinegar (ew) but it makes it very yummy and soft.. (velvety).

Here's the recipe: (i'll go put it on the other cooking board too)

Ingredients
1/2 cup shortening
1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon butter flavor (optional)
1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 level tablespoons cocoa
2-1/2 cups sifted cake flour
(or 2 cups and three tablespoons all-purpose flour, sifted)
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon salt
1 (1-ounce) bottle red food coloring

Method
Cream shortening, sugar, eggs and flavors until very light and fluffy (3 to 5 minutes). Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to the mixture. Alternately add flour and buttermilk and continue mixing on medium for 3 minutes. Mix soda and vinegar in small bowl; add to batter. Blend well. Bake in three greased and floured 9 or 10 inch cake pans for 20-25 minutes at 350 F. Let cool completely. Remove from pans. Frost with cream cheese frosting (below). Serves: 12.

Are you doing the southern thing of having the top layer be red velvet?

Its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YUMMY!

We plan to have it as our cake with Red icing and cream accents.. the filler is still up for debate, either banana creme or white chocolate.

It always reminds me to Steal Magnolia's. The cake was a armadilla with gray icing
The recipe looks good though, yummy!

its sad that I know this, but just the top layer.

Since our colors are Red & Gold the whole darned cake will be red velvet.

I didnt realize Nick & Jessica used it.. didnt really care that much about their wedding.

It's a real common speciality cake for southerners. I love it so much, poor Jim was clueless about it. So in a way this is MY part of my family traditions coming through!

Strange looking but also delicious. I have never seen a red cake before. I love different colored food and drinks... like those bright blue drinks.

Very good you get an A
Yes, we do have different layers. Chocolate and Vanilla, red velvet and strawberry.. but Im sticking with just one for the whole thing. Seemed to me that all the weddings I went to with the different layers someone always ended up whining they got a layer they didnt like as much.

ETA: 'We' meaning southerners. Although you'll be hard pressed to convince me that Texas is in the 'South'. But for the this purpose I guess it's a bit Southern, other than I wont mix up the layers. I can only imagine the reaction of my Hall when I ask for THAT!!!

Oh- I ididn't realize the layes was a southern thing too. I have read thoguh that its a bad idea, especailly if it will cost you more, b/c peopel don't get to choose their layer anyway.

I like your idea.
Its cool that the colors go with the Chinese theme & the red velvet is part of your Texan tradions.

These things intrigue me. liek Nsgrahams kosher-jamaican wedding.

mine's just regular old American.

although we've joked about my dad wearing a kilt & having belgian chocolte as a favor & the jordan almonds for the italian part of our families.
Not sure what to do about the Germans, though.

I knew I'd get in trouble with that.

I have a friend form New Orleans who is the same way.
( 'We don't even have the same accent' she says. . .)

OOOOH belgian Chocolate!! YUM
If you really want to add in the German view just search some books or sites perhaps put your favors in a german styled favors. Lots of cultures have different styles of small boxed favors. Most started by ways to give children gifts and the box itself was half the fun. Good Luck!

that's intersting.
I don't think we are goign to use any of the cultural stuff though, its too distant from us & too varied. We are just American muts.
