For those who bought dress already, how did you decide?

Original post by michesq

I am not going for my first wedding gown appt. till 5/10 so spending some time looking at dresses from various designers, etc. I have about 20 I like. That seems like soooo many.

Did you get the dress you loved online? Saw on the rack? the one you did not like till you tried it on? Will the right dress just scream out to me?

I really didn't love the one I bought until I saw it in person. I had a list of a dozen I wanted to try and the one I bought was pretty low on the list. My dress was amazing in person and it was everything I wanted. After trying on 12 dresses (all of which were gorgeous!) I just kept going back to that one. I tried it on again and made the decision. It was perfect for me.

I looked online for my dress. I had my favorites and then tried on a few, but my favorites online ended up being my favorites in person too. I went for the dress that made me feel beautiful and special. I think it also matched my personality and the style of the wedding itself (but I'm just thinking about this in retrospect).

i went with one of my BM, my mother and aunt and the woman who was helping us at the bridal store was just not listening to what i wanted to see - my BM went ripping thru the racks and i was just so disappointed with everything that i was seeing - i had two dresses left to try on and i was just annoyed and told them that we should go look for MOB dresses and BM dresses - i was told to try on the last dress that was in the dressing room (i skipped one terrible looking one ) and the last dress i put on - i put it on and literally was smiling ear to ear and the tears were pouring down my cheeks - it was my dress - when you know - you just know that its your dress - its a weird feeling :)

Well for me, I tried on a bnch that I thought I loved!!
Until I tried on the one I got.. I cried.. it just felt right! It was bitter sweet and just felt inside... as dorky as that sounds!
Good luck though and remember to have fun!!

I thought I was never going to find 'the one', because there's honestly a lot of dresses that I find beautiful..I mean, c'mon they are Wedding gowns..they are pretty much all beautiful, ya know?!?

But there were a few things I wanted, princess waiste (thats not what it's called, I dont think, but its when it comes to a point), I wanted pickups but not too many, I wanted a sweetheart neckline and I wanted flowly looking material..I looked online for ideas but nothing really screamed at me until I found my dress..the second I saw it I kept calling it 'my dress' hehe it had everything I wanted!! I then went on a wild goose hunt finding a store that carried it, tried it on and was IN LOVE!! I tried on another one just to make sure it wasn't the 'im in a wedding dress kinda happy' lolz..and it did nothing for me..so I knew it was the one!!!!

I always loved ballgown and most of the ball gown dresses from this designer were my favorites but then an 08 bride posted pics of herself in the dress and I started searching it like crazy. In my mind I knew it was my dream dress but when I saw it in person it couldn't compare. It was made for me, then I went to another salon with my mom to try it on and she cried and that was all I needed.

well.. i was looking through bridal books and i saw it... fell in love and looked for any bridal store that carried it for me to try it on. i finally found one, tried it on and loved it even more in person. i was gonna wait to get it but i saw a deal i couldn't pass up. i got it online for only $300... its worth $800.

That IS a great deal!!! I hope I find something like that!

Re: For those who bought dress already, how did you decide?

Well first I fell in love with a dress in the magazine and had my heart set on it but, when I put it on it didnt look right at all. Then I thought I fell in love with a dress I tried on but, when I looked at in pics and tried it on again it wasnt the one, that happened with a few. So needless to say after several dress shops and many, many dresses I found the one. Victoriana by Maggie. Funny thing is I thought it was ugly because I dont like the pic they use in the magazines or online. I had gone to Lillettes and Gerri pulled it out the 1st time I went there and tried it on, not knowing it was that dress and like it but, didnt say anyting cause my mom didnt like pick ups. Went back later on and she pulled it out again and that was it. It was the second time I tired a dress on and still liked it. I still tried on a few more months after and it still was the one, so thats when I ordered the dress.
Its hard for me to make up my mind on something like this so I had to make sure.
Sorry this was long.

I actually did not like my dress at all on the hanger. The sales lady insisted I try it on because she said that it looked magnificent on. I was skeptical but figured what do I have to lose. Seriously once the zipper went up and she clamped me in....I was IN LOVE! So, try on everything, even things you don't think you would like. I spent months researching and pulling out ideas I liked just to end up getting something I thought I didn't want LOL You never know!

Re: For those who bought dress already, how did you decide?

i had looked online and found a general style i liked.. when i went to the store and started looking at that style i realized i hated how it looked on me. so then i had on my mom, aunt and my best friend (also a bm) with me and i had them pick out dresses they liked as well as the lady helping us and tried on all of them. the moment i knew i had my dress was when my mom and everyone got all teary-eyed and it felt so surreal. plus with the veil on, i just knew it was the dress. it was so perfect.

i would suggest not focusing on finding a particular dress, but maybe a style
