I tipped only the 2 doormen/guards who I liked (they weren't really doormen...) and the super who was SO nice...even jumped over a 12th floor terrace when I locked myself out of my apt!! (granted I was locked out b/c of him...but still nice)

Re: For those who have doormen
Really? $10
for some reason I was under the impression that we had to tip like $50 per doorman?
Also, my friend came to visit us last night and she told them our last name....he didnt know who we were!!!!
I know...I was poor...so $10 and cookies...but they weren't really doormen...they were just guards for 24 hours...and there would be days when I would be struggling with all my bags and they would just watch me fumble for my keys...so i didn't really think they should get too much...

Re: For those who have doormen
we're poor too!!!!
To be honest with you I don't know half of their names and our lobby has been under construction since we moved in so there is never any help with our bags etc.
But I have heard from our neighbors that they normally do.
also, since they don't even know our names, how will they know who we are if we give them a tip? for some reason it bothers me. Of course I will tip them but they should know who we are!!!!!!

i was wondering this too. we also just moved in in sept, and it's a sublet. i don't know all of their names, but they all know me. i don't even know how many there are b/c i only see the same 3 guys, but sometimes there's another one and i'm like who the heck is that? anyway, more input would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: For those who have doormen
I was thinking about this the other day too. We need take care of the guys in our bldg.
In my mother's building they take a collection from all the residents and present the building employees with one gift from everyone. And it's a reasonable amount like $40.
Does anyone tip their mailman?? Ours left a Season's Greetings post card in our mail box the other day. I am guessing it was a hint

Re: For those who have doormen
As per this week's Newsweek Cheat Sheet Tips For tipping: *Newspaper carriers, trash collectors and regular parking lot attendants will appreciate between $15 and $25 *Mail carriers aren't supposed to take gifts worth more than $20, and the Postal Service discourages cash. Instead of cookies, think of something like a coffee-shop gift card. If you want to go over the limit, the USPS says that you can give more than one gift a year, but they shouldn't top $50. *The doorman who screens your ex-boyfriends and delivers packages all year probaby deserves the high end of the recommended $25-$100 range. Give the super the same, and the custodian $20-$30. *Teachers? Gifts, not cash, of nominal value. Stationery, snacks, and bookmarks are favorites. *The gift that everyone appreciates: a letter to his supervisor describing what a good job he does for you all year long.
The article also mentions Tipping.org and there is also a similar article in this month's Martha Stewart Living, but I don't have the issue with me right now.

Re: For those who have doormen
i used to give them bottles of liquor for the holidays, and money to only the ones who went out of their way for me.

Re: For those who have doormen
I think it also depends upon where you live. My BIL is a doorman on Park Ave. The average tip is $200.00, there are a handful that give more.

Re: For those who have doormen
We have a super for our building - we don't call him with too many issues, but he's nice so we tip him $40 each year.
