Re: For those who have used a moving company
I moved from Queens to Jersey City...was supposed to be about $400. Wound up being $900, and this is after :1) they were late
2) got lost
3) truck engine went on fire
4) they got into an accident in front of our building.
And when we refused to pay extra they wouldn't give us our TV or computer. And there is no law agaisnt this. Make sure you get a really reputable company. Can't remember the name but I believe they are based out of Hicksville.

Re: For those who have used a moving company
I just called 2 companies last week. One quoted me $94/hour + 1.5 hours travel and the other $104/hr + 2 hours travel. They both estimated my move (2 bedroom apartment on 1st floor from Queens to house in LI) to take about 7-8 hours (this depends on how much stuff you have). This is with me doing all of my own boxing/packing. This is for them to move and wrap furniture and move boxes to and from the truck. (Both companies were recommended to by friends who recently moved. I wanted to go with someone a friend would recommend.)
The more expensive of the two also would have charged extra for the move of my big screen tv, wrapping my glass shelves from my china closet and for wardrobe boxes.
Also, additional insurance is $5 for each $1,000...I believe.

Re: For those who have used a moving company
The company I use charges $100 an hour with a min of 3 hours plus 1 hour travel time. We moved from Massapequa to Farmingville, two bedroom apartment and it cost us about $500. Both apartments were ground floor and we had everything packed in boxes before they arrived.

Re: For those who have used a moving company
I hate those moving company's people! always rip you off! i can not tell you what trouble my parents had when they moved 5 years ago! Sometimes i think hiring a truck is the best idea! i would rather pay my friends to help me move! the thing is also that those people do an awful job, rip you off AND expect a tip! they quoted my parents one price and then asked to be paid much more, or they don't give them thei stuff back! So my mom had to give them the money. THen they brought everything upstaires and she said: well, what ever money i would have used for the tip you already got, so I have no more! HA! A$$holes!
please, be carefull and do research! go on BBB site to check out the company you want to use! best of luck!

Re: For those who have used a moving company
I shopped around a bit for our move this past Jan. The rates ranged from $95.00 to $125.00 per hour for 4 men and a truck. Packing/materials/oversized items and insurance are additional. Just be sure to check them out with the BBB. If possible have them come in and look at what you have so they can give you a more accurate estimate. Specifically ask about the size of the truck they use. The company we used was very carefull with our stuff, fast and reasonably priced BUT their truck was two small and they had to make two trips from Queens to Nassau!

Re: For those who have used a moving company
I used Men on the Move in Floral Park.Rates were very reasonable!!! It was $174 for 3 men for 3 hours. Be very careful about how many men you will need. When I moved out (this was my move in rate) I only had 2 guys thinking I'd be saving money. Well, the 2 guys couldn't lift my entertainment center and it took them an hour and 1/2 to do it by themselves. Needless to say, I went over the 3 hours- not their fault though, I was trying to save $$$ and shot myself in the foot.
Good luck!
